The Jewish Hangout of Budapest
Years ago, philanthropist Michael Steinhardt financed the establishment of Makor, a spot on the Upper West Side that was supposed to allow Jews to do Jewish, and sometimes not-so-Jewish, things in a Jewish space that didn’t scream I’M A JEWISH SPACE!

Jewish Salons Vienna
So, Budapest. Been here only since late Thursday, but so much has happened—full day of meetings on Friday, huge Shabbat dinner thing Friday night, first day off in 2.5 weeks Saturday, and an evening spent at Cafe Siraly (I’d tell you there’s a video coming soon, but you wouldn’t believe it anyway).

Mexican odds and ends
Wrapped up the final bits and pieces from my 10 days in Mexico. A final video, about the various neighborhoods where Jews lived in their 20th century journey up the ladder of Mexican society. Plus two stories—one about the tentative steps to open up Mexico’s traditionally closed Jewish community, and another about a historical archive with some fascinating documents about Diego Rivera’s connections with Jewish intellectuals, as well as other gems.

Eating Mexican in Mexico
First, muchos gracias to the Jewish community of Guadalajara for their hospitality the last two days. Rabbi Joshua Kullock and the Conservative community hosted us for a pre-fast meal and Kol Nidre on Sunday night, and Fanny Mizrahi and the older Orthodox community took care of us on Monday and for the break fast. I’ll bring you the story of these two communities shortly, as it speaks to both the particularities of Mexican Jewish life, as well as the broad challenges facing smaller Jewish communities.

Radio free Mexico
As many Mexican Jews will tell you, despite the community’s relatively small numbers—with some 40-50,000 souls, Mexican Jews make up .04 percent of the country’s population—they are nonetheless believed to number many more. That’s predominantly a function of the community’s relative affluence and outsized influence on the wider culture.
