JTA: The Global News Service of the Jewish People

Burning Shabbat

The high point of activities for the week at Sukkat Shalom was easily the Friday night Kabbalat Shabbat service. With all of the debauchery on offer on the playa, it was refreshing to have a holy experience, even if the largely traditional service did have a distinct Burning Man quality to it: bare breasted women and other forms of Burning Man costumage, mostly. The service itself was spirited with loads of singing and was held under a metal-framed geodesic dome. At least 200 people showed, forming concentric circles underneath the dome, with several people climbing on top the scaffolding for a better look. There's some video below.

Over the years many people have said how they love the calm in the middle of the Burning Man beautiful wildness. Sure, it looks like a circus, but the joy and love of Hashem, yidden, all people, the earth, tikkun olam is deep and real.

shalom v’ahava,
Menachem
