Agriprocessors: We’re immigrants too!

Two days after immigrants and their advocates marched in Postville, Agriprocessors released this statement:

The founders of Agriprocessors, the Rubashkin family, are a Jewish refugee family that escaped the clutches of Communism decades ago. Aron and Rivka Rubashkin fled Soviet Russia after experiencing oppression in the anti religious regime. Mrs. Rubashkin’s uncles were imprisoned in Siberia due to their religious beliefs. Mr. Rubashkin noted: “As immigrants in America we found freedom and opportunity. We fully understand the pain and suffering which immigrants are going through in building better lives.”

Agriprocessors is dedicated to providing economic prosperity, quality jobs and a safe environment for all its employees. Chaim Abrahams, a company spokesman, explained: “We are committed to follow all federal, state and local regulations in our plant.” In reiterating the company policy, Mr. Rubashkin pointed to the hiring of Jim Martin, a former US Attorney in the state of Missouri, as the chief compliance officer of Agriprocessors. “ He is insuring that our company excels in the area of compliance to government regulation” noted Abrahams. Among other things, Mr. Martin established a 24-hour anonymous hotline for any complaints of workers.

Since the plant opened in 1988, it has created a new era of prosperity in the region. The plant has created jobs, and given a boost to the area. Our plant is modern, clean, and consistently focused on food safety and the safety of our workers.

Agriprocessors is deeply concerned about the plight of the immigrant families in Postville. The Rubashkin family feels that it can help others. Aron Rubashkin explained “As an immigrant family we want to provide our workers with the opportunity to share in the American dream. In recent weeks we have been helping the local families with their daily needs”.

I’m sorry, but the obscene number of charges and their severity, plus the fact that new charges are being filed almost weekly, are increasingly hard to believe. Anyone who breaks the law deserves to be punished, but until the Iowa Attorney General decides which charges will be filed, if any, I am completely withholding judgment.

Federal authorities charged that a methamphetamine laboratory was operating at the nation’s largest kosher slaughterhouse and that employees carried weapons to work. ??The charges were among the most explosive details to emerge following the massive raid Monday at Agriprocessors in Postville, Iowa. - The truth is anti semitic.

Aaron and Rivka Rubashkin immigrated to this country legally. Mr. Rubashkin states, “We fully understand the pain and suffering which immigrants are going through in building better lives.” He apparently doesn’t or he wouldn’t have hired illegal immigrants to work in his plant, knowing that those employees’ lives could be ripped apart at any moment. As a legal immigrant he certainly knew the difference between legal and illegal immigrants. Of course the illegals also are to blame; they know that deportation is a consequence of being caught.

However, the Rubashkin family preyed on the deportation fears of their illegal workers. They provided horrendous working conditions and broke child labor laws for the sake of making a profit. Agriprocessor’s success as the nation’s largest kosher meat processor should also be questioned – by hiring illegals they have had an unfair advantage over their competition. And I doubt they were committed to following all federal, state and local regulations as Mr. Chaim Abrahams claims; someone was paid to look the other way for this situation to escalate to the proportions it did.

The Rubanskins are no better than those they fled in Soviet Russia for a better life in America. If our government doesn’t prosecute Mr. Rubaskin and the other owners of Agriprocessors to the full extent of the law, they are sending the message to other unscrupulous employers that it is okay to operate outside of the labor laws that ensure the safety of all employees; that it is okay to hire and encourage illegals to violate our immigration laws to come here.

Talk about chutzpa! Your honor, I killed my parents and I throw myself upon the mercy of the court because I am a poor orphan!”

Translation of statement from b.s. into English: “America! We shunned your workers and hired illegal alien work thieves because they were so much cheaper and then we even mistreated them. We are immigrant-parasites who grew rich by taking advantage of your nation. You should really like us and be nice to us because we were persecuted (we say) 30 years ago; it doesn’t matter what we’ve done to your country since!”

Dear Vered,

You quote the Des Moines register:

“[F]ederal records indicate the company chose not to participate in the government’s voluntary program that enables employers to quickly verify the Social Security numbers of job applicants. ..”

That program is called E-Verify. A free government program.

Question to you: Does the Wal-Mart you shop at participate in that program?

Does the restaurant you eat in participate in this program? Who washes the dishes there?

Did you ask the gardener who mows you lawn have this program in place?

Does General Motors have this program?

Should AgriProcessors have been “holier than the pope?

This piece is surreal. They kicked their employees and one was duct-taped and beaten with a meat hook. “[F]ederal records indicate the company chose not to participate in the government’s voluntary program that enables employers to quickly verify the Social Security numbers of job applicants. ... Court records indicate the Social Security Administration repeatedly warned Agriprocessors that hundreds of its employees - perhaps as much as 78 percent of the work force - appeared to be using fraudulent Social Security numbers or names.”—Des Moines Register, link below.

The whole Rubashkin family is a blot on the face of America, from the illegal chemical storage and arson in the East Coast branch to the Lakota-and-Mexican-exploiting, entrail-dumping Agriprocessor branch. If this is what they learned growing up under the Soviet system, I wish they had stayed there and become “new rich,” rather than coming here and burdening our criminal justice system with their misdeeds and our people with their horrific images of the largest kosher meat processor in the nation.

This is not weird fringe news, and these people are not making it up. They even have pictures. So please, JTA, pay attention when apologists for the Rubashkins start posting as soon as you mention them; recall that the last PR firm the family hired did exactly that, under aliases.

Des Moines Register article: http://www.desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080706/NEWS/807060335 “For years, the plant didn’t provide protective clothing to employees who worked with corrosive chemicals. Protective jackets, pants and boots were available, but they were treated by Agriprocessors as personal clothing that had to be purchased from the plant. ... For at least six years, workers were being charged $30 for the pants and $30 for the jackets. Boots were $20.85. At those prices, 100 rain suits would have generated $8,000 in revenue for the company. By comparison, the state fine for this serious safety violation was $1,000.”

Seriously, do the Rubashkins sound like they are “deeply concerned” about anything other than wringing as much money as possible from anyone they can squeeze?

Amazing, they want to “help”. They were allowed to come to the US, and they’ve profited, but it seems they got wealthy by ungratefully demanding the right to violate our immigration laws, national sovreignty, they hate American wage laws, workplace protections and American citizen workers.

Then again, these “refuge” millionaire factory owners don’t even mind violating their own religious laws about the slaughter of animals used for meat.

Sorry, but the Rubashkin are a crime family, and they should be arrested and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. One of their relatives managed to get a government contract for billions of dollars, claiming to distribute weapons and ammunition, for the army. The relative was arrested for fraud. He sold old, and dangerous ordinance, bought from disreputable sources to our army, and pocketed the profits. Other relatives are involved in other shady scams.

You do not treat others this way, nor do you steal, and discriminate against citizens. If the government, and in fact the Jewish community are going to support the insanity, the hypocrisy, and abuse perpetuated by these criminals, then to me, they are hypocrites and criminal themselves. For goodness sake, do you not have any compassion for working poor American citizens who have always done these jobs, and those jobs paid well, lifting people out of poverty.

Perhaps you rationalize undermining the rights of American workers? Isn’t there something you’re forgetting about your own people’s history, and wanting to be treated fairly? Or is it only when it’s you that it matters? What the Rubashkin’s have done and rationalized is akin to slavery.

There are several noteworthy things about this issue.

First, these aliens (not “illegal immigrants,” the politically-correct term) broke the law by entering the United States in a method inconsistent with proper, well-established and lawful procedures. On that basis alone they are criminals…period.

Second, their illegal entry is a slap in the face to those who did the right thing, both morally and legally, by following the rules, waiting, in many cases, for years.

Third, their illegal entry tells others that they have no issue with breaking the law. After all, they simply “want a better life.” Lawlessness begets lawlessness, and all such actions, whether committed by aliens or citizens, reinforce the idea that breaking the law is acceptable when it suits our own purposes; the ends justify the means. It’s “situation ethics” on a grand scale.

Fourth, their illegal entry speaks volumes about the type of citizen they might be should they ever actually become lawfully naturalized, which in and of itself seems doubtful.

Fifth, there is a lot of blame to spread around in this regard. Employers, as “good community citizens,” have a duty, both morally and legally, to see past the dollar signs and do the right thing. Aliens also have the same moral and legal responsibility to follow the law. To “want a better life” should not and does not include side-stepping the legality of their entry into the United States. Further, our own government has a moral and legal mandate to enforce the law. Their willingness to “look the other way” and, in fact, work with the national governments of one or more of these aliens’ native countries in aiding their illegal entry is a sad statement of how far both the Democrats and Republicans, especially at the Federal level, have sunk.

Sixth, I find it instructive that out of all the “Press ‘1’ for English”-type phone messages I’ve heard, not one has offered their callers the option of any language other than Spanish. Why is that? Is that because Spanish-speaking people are incapable of learning English? Are the Chinese, Koreans, Somalians, Italians, Germans, and many others for whom English is not a native tongue the only ones that can and do learn English? I think not. So, why do those who speak Spanish get special treatment?

Seventh, for all the criticism that anti-illegal immigration advocates get that they are “racist,” it’s those chanting “La Raza!” who are the real racists. Some of them go even further by telling some to take a swim back to Europe because America, or at least parts of it, belongs to “La Raza!” And this is a view that has been articulated for years, unbeknownst to many U.S. citizens.

Eighth, I find it especially disturbing that the Catholic Church there in Postville, along with some Jewish groups and others, supports the breaking of the law under the guise of how we all need to “love your neighbor,” as if to “love your neighbor” and to be lawful are mutually exclusive. I’m not sure what the church there would have to gain other than more money rolling into their coffers. Perhaps that’s not the case, but, following the money does tend to pull all sorts of skeletons out of the closets. For their part, the Jews who participated in supporting those entering, living and working in the United States illegally, the only answer I can find is, there again, that it has to do with money. It makes sense to me as the Agriprocessors plant in question is owned by Jews. And like any business, lower labor costs can only add to the bottom line.

Shame on all of them, aliens included, I say.
