BBYO to steer clear of Rubashkin’s

B’nai Brith Youth Organization will abstain from Agriprocessors meat this summer. Here’s their statement:

Camp Food is No Joking Matter

BBYO Teens Demand Agriprocessor-Free Camp Programs

As a result of the allegations of intolerable injustices at Agriprocessors, the largest producer of kosher meat and poultry in the U.S., BBYO takes major stand by asking its various camp partners to avoid serving Agriprocessor products, to which they comply.

Nine hundred teens participating in BBYO’s summer leadership experiences at Perlman Camp, PA; Beber Camp, WI; and American Hebrew Academy, CA, over the course of this summer, will eat meals free of Agriprocessor products, showing a unified commitment to social justice and Jewish values.

Teens make concerted effort to expand summer program curricula to address the Agriprocessor issue from variety of angles, including the ritual and ethical implications of kashrut, worker’s rights, immigration reform and Jewish values.

The first program will take place on Thursday, June 26, 11:45 am – 1:15 pm, when nearly 100 Jewish teens will gather at Beber Camp in Mukwonago, Wisconson (suburban Milwaukee) to make their voices heard against the intolerable injustices at Agriprocessors. Confirmed speakers include Rabbi Morris Allen, a Minneapolis-based leader of the Heksher Tzedek campaign for kosher foods to be produced ethically, who has been to Postville multiple times and will share first-hand accounts from factory workers. Lauren Shenfeld, BBYO’s International Teen Co-President, will also address the group, to raise awareness among her peers and encourage action when teens return home to their local communities.

“If anyone is going to make their opinion on this problem matter to the Jewish community and communities at large, and ultimately stand up against an issue in which human rights and Jewish values are demeaned, it’s BBYO teens.” – Lauren Shenfeld, BBYO International Teen Co-President

“The reason this issue has struck such a deep chord with BBYO teens is because it’s the story of their grandparents and great grandparents – the story of immigrating to find a better life, fighting oppression and standing up for social justice.” – Marilyn Sneiderman, BBYO Deputy Director and former Director of Field Mobilization for the National AFL-CIO

I am a Jew, a veterinarian, and former USDA Meat Inspector at slaughter houses. When I wore the BADGE I could shut down any meat packing plant that I was assigned to, AND I COULD NOT BE FIRED!!! (US Meat Inspection Law) My jurisdiction extended to any inhumane or unsafe practices in the plant. Every side of beef or package of processed meat has to be marked, US INSPECTED & PASSED AND AND APPLIED UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF A VETERINARIAN!

BBYO & B’nai Brith: Don’t be fooled by emotional, religious and political smokescreens. Demand from the USDA, Rubashkins a statement from the plant veterinarian(s). Iwill be glad to confront those colleages with the right questions, anytime you want me to.

This whole muckraking affair stinls, and not from bad meat.

To Brittany

I know Aron Rubashkin personally for last 15 years, and to show you what kind of people he and his wife are I just show you a few samples. On Shabos, when he goes home from Shul, he picks people from the street to feed them and celebrate Shabos with him, I personally observed about 20 guest at his Shabos table. People in need are getting room and board at his home constantly. His wife runs a small restaurant in Boro Park, where about half of its customers (regardless of race and religion) get food for free. They do not mistreat anybody, even a cat. It is just against their nature!

Next I want to bring two examples from my experience with Mexican workers. On one occasion we negotiated one price, but when we arrived at a job location, the price just went up, and on the other occasion they just aborted work in the middle of a job, because they had to go a second job. This people simply have different work ethic.

You are bringing very serious allegations, which you do not have any proof. Why do not you just wait and see the end of investigation (what a Jew should do!) and then make any conclusion.

First off, why should bbyo be ashamed? We’re taking a stand as young jewish teens who are becoming involved in a serious topic involving their religious social community. Even though it hasnt actually been proved to be a true argument there is as much evidence I as a human being with strong beliefs needed. If you would hear some of the workers stories you would be repulsed. ACTUALLY being a participant in this at Beber Camp in Mukwonago, Wisconsin I got to hear first hand from many sources about the story of Agriprocessors. One instance there was a 15 year old boy from Guatemala who immigrated to the U.S. to work at Agriproccesors promised citizen papers for a slight cost and a job. What he ended up with you may ask? A sexual abused sister by the workers there, a mother in trouble with the government, thousands of dollars due to the company for papers, & no home to be able to go home to back in Guatemala. To a roomfull of Jew’s this was disgusting to hear such a person that shared the same religious views as us would do this & on top of that the Agriproccesor owner is a Rabbi. To hear a Rabbi was allowing child labor, teens loosing limbs, rape of young girls, and such go on in a Kosher meat packing industry is nauseating. The Holocaust happened to us and to think that a Rabbi would let this type of hurting go on with other humans is sickening. Even though people may say that yeah they’re immigrants...THEY"RE HUMAN TOO. Even though they arent legal U.S. citizens they still have all the same functions as you and me. And I think BBYO teens should be applauded for actually becoming involved in a serious subject, because frankly I’m sure most of you haven’t been reported on by the Wall Street Journal for becoming involved in something you believe in.

Just because 0 weapons was found, does not mean Saddam Hussein did not have it, it might be well hidden somewhere in Syria. There were a lot of evidence he had it or might have it. It is better safe, then sorry! I just do not understand, why are you defending enemies of Israel? Is it what you have done all your life?

Regarding this woman “Juana” mentioned in the article, who had no medical insurance, can you contact the author and find out from the writer of this article how did he find her? If he himself spoke to her? Or he is using data from another article? Do some foot work, like I did.

As stated before, Bush said that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. And as we look into recent news not from 1990, more than 10 years before the war, US soldiers in Iraq found 0, yes 0, weapons of mass destruction

And refering to the proof of lack of health insurance or health insurance that is to costly and the low wages given out, you can look at the jewish newspaper, The Forward, article on the agriprocessors http://www.forward.com/articles/in-iowa-meat-plant-kosher-‘jungle’-breeds-fea/

What is your proof – employees did not have medical insurance? Show it to me and I will make further investigation.

Regarding your statement about our president, it makes me to say there is something wrong with your memory, read this http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/History/Gulf_War.html , Saddam Hussein was greatest enemy of Israel and Jewish people, he sent missiles into Israel, as a Jew you should be thankful to our president for exterminating this evil man and great enemy of Israel! It makes me to say again - you are acting like a prosecutor against Jews!

So you would rather take the word of the employers who are trying to cover up their tracks than the workers who have repeatedly have told of the mistreatment they have received at the plant. I guess the government wouldn’t have fined them all those times if everything was great there

The president of the US also said that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction......

To Moses,

Well they have done many illegal things and have actually received citations for it and fines.

Do not call me anything against jews because i have practiced my entire life.

Just because a company is owned by jews doesn’t give it a right to continue to practice wrongs against its employees. Don’t you think that if a fellow Jew is committing wrongs that it is our duty as his brothers and sisters to steer that group on the right path. We should not support a group that is committing sins just because their jewish. We should force them to change their ways so that we can buy from them in the future.

To Zack,

I agree with you, everyone needs a healthcare coverage and should have one, lets all of us talk to our local politicians, but what it has to do with boycotting Agriprocessor?? It looks like Agri has become an “escape goat” for all political failures in Washington.

Regarding comparison between me and biblical Moses, since I am not well versed in biblical text, all I can say that Moses was a Jewish Advocate (he was defending Jews before God, Pharaoh, Egyptians etc) and that is what I am trying to do on this forum, defend the Jewish company (which has not done anything illegal!!!), but you are acting like a prosecutor against Jews!

Its kind of ironic that your name is moses because if you were actually back in that time period you would probably be defending pharaoh explaining that the Jews could be worse off. The original Moses could not stand the oppression the jewish people were under and had them rise up and fight back. But your entire arguement is that while these people are being mistreated in the plant, it is alright because they have a job and aren’t back in their own country. Changes in society only occur from action, so hoping that businesses will change health care or waiting on someone else to create a change is not a good philosophy.

If we want health care for everyone, we have to force politicians and government to do it.

Step down to earth and embrace the reality, the word you are describing will exist only after Machiach will come (people will not get sick at all!), let’s pray it will be soon!

I am not working for any PR firm (I am just a programmer by trade), I just always say what is right and do not care if it is politically correct, but I take it as a compliment.

To Moses,

Does it make it right because so many don’t have insurance that the workers at this plant shouldn’t be provided with it. It is very bad logic to think that because alot of businesses are bad that we should do nothing about it.

It is our duty to make sure that in the jewish community that we make sure our people are not the ones committing these evils. Also that is interesting that you are supporting child labor with that statement you made. You realize that this is not the industrial age in this country anymore.

Does the PR firm you work for know you are making that comment? That’s not very good public relations skills

To Zack,

Yes, my friend has medical insurance and can see a doctor, but what about 47 million Americans, who are here legally and do not have medical insurance? (http://www.mcclatchydc.com/100/story/19319.html) Who should you be boycotting in this case? About you boycotting stores, who use child labor, what do you think these poor kids will do if not working? Go to school? I wish they could, but read this http://www.freeessays.cc/db/43/sxg181.shtml. Do not make thing worse then they are!!!

To Moses

but does your friend receive health benefits and get paid above minimum wage?

The people at this plant are injured and can’t go see a doctor

Oh and in response to your boycott question:

First as you have noticed from the BBYO statement, this is not a boycott

Second, I dont go to big box stores such as Wal-Mart because of the terrible effects they have on society, or clothes stores such as H&M who are responsible for using child labor to produce their clothing overseas

To Daniel:

As I stated before, this is not about the citizenship status of the workers at the plant but the way they are being treated, that is why BBYO is not buying from them. It is because their workers are undocumented

People get injured at the Agri not because of mistreatment, but because of the nature of the business, I have a friend who works in a big carpentry shop (Unionized with all safety procedures!!) and still people get hurt.

What do any of your points have to do with how the owners treat their workers?

If i found out that any of the local businesses near me had workers losing hands and being injured all the time and being overworked and paid under minimum wage i would not shop there. I do not care if it is a kosher place or not.

Apparently you do not care about human life because many workers from the plant have come out talking about the mistreatment by the owners of the plant. they have been fined for many violations in the past. Most of the people who have posted understand the facts.

To Zack .

Zack, if you really want to change something, you should start with you! For example, start boycotting your local grocery or restaurant. But you will never do it, since it will cost you extra buck and cause a lot of incontinence. But to boycott Kosher meat packer (even before all the facts came true and investigation is pending) is easy, you do not keep kosher anyway! Who are you trying to fool?

What people need to focus on is that this debate is not about the use of undocumented workers but the fact that the agriprocessors mistreated their workers.

Many people at the plant were injured everyday while being paid below minimum wage, working long hours, and receiving no benefits.

The discussion is not about the workers citizenship or the boarder, its about whether the workers should be treated as badly as they are being treated.

Most of these posters are looking at this the wrong way.

There is never an excuse for wrongdoing, yet the plain truth is that it is more than hard, nearing impossible, to get non immigrants to work at places like this. Even Heineman has illegals - probably not as much.

It’s a slaughterhouse. There is blood, there is sinew, bones, and organs; there are animals sensing death and frightened. It’s everything you’d expect from a the worst slasher films. It’s not for the faint of heart and it is certainly not for the average latte sipping American.

Yes, this was the biggest raid - but not the biggest secret. Virtually the entire farming and agricultural industry is engined by immigrants, many illegal. The hidden secret here is that it’s done. Ask the folks at HIAS - the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, and they’ll tell you that they feel for the employers here. They know first hand what is happening all over the country.

One issue may be that Agriprocessors needs to make serious changes to get up to full speed and compliance, but the real issue here is the United States’ immigration policy. It needs fixing and fixing fast. The lesson of Agriprocessors is that this is a problem looming large and will only get worse.

let Agriprocessors fix up and get the meat back on your plates. Chicken is now $7.49/lb - bizarre. People can’t afford that. Meat is even more now.

Let’s focus on the real problem - fixing the U.S. immigration policy. Instead of boycotting the meat company, make an even stronger effort to patronize shops with illegals - show our legislators that this is an issue that they need to take seriously and take it seriously now!

I’m seventeen years old and a proud member of BBYO.

To Moses: You may have heard Rosalind’s comment before but clearly you weren’t truly listening as the issues she addresses haven’t been resolved. Maybe you should read it again.

Yes, by boycotting the company’s meat this summer, BBYO is only scratching the surface of a much larger problem. But as the biggest Jewish Youth movement in the world, our scratching will undoubtedly leave a mark and a positive one at that.

No matter what is said in this blog, I assure you that I will be using my power as president of the Los Angeles area to educate fellow members on this issue in terms of how it relates to worker’s rights, immigration reform, and Jewish values. If I have learned anything from BBYO, it’s that it is the duty of each individual to strengthen their Jewish community. Both the aruments supporting Agriprocessor’s behavior and the employers’ compassion for the workers are just plain weak and therefore, I see BBYO’s action as a responsiblity that other’s need to recognize as well.

I applaud BBYO for taking this stand. Since first becoming informed two

years ago, my organization, the Jewish Labor Committee (JLC) has opposed the

practices of Agriprocessors with regard to its workers.

Given the workforce at Agriprocessors was largely composed of

undocumented workers, the JLC recognizes that these workers need to

be brought into compliance with the law and face the legal consequences of their decisions. Equally, we support fair treatment of workers regardless of where they were born. Two employees working side by side are entitled to the same pay and protections under the law.

Just as the immigrant workers at Agriprocessors need to answer to the

law, so too should the employers. Employers who threaten and harass

their workers, short their pay, put their health and safety at risk, and

hire children must also be brought into compliance with the law and

face the consequences of their actions. The conditions under which

documented and undocumented workers endured were clearly contrary

to Jewish values.

Our country has a tradition of taking advantage of vulnerable

populations and then blaming them for our economic problems.

Jewish immigrants experienced this acutely at the turn of the century.

Immigrant s are scapegoated as the reason Americans are getting

poorer and are accused for “taking our jobs.” The real problems are

unscrupulous employers who take advantage of a workforce unable

to speak the language, and fearful of arrest and deportation, a broken

immigration policy, unfair trade policies, lopsided labor laws, faulty

mortgage lending practices and a tax system gone awry. BBYO’s stand is

an opportunity to explore all these issues.

Our Jewish religion and tradition is clear on topic of treating workers

with dignity and respect. Our sacred texts command us to pay workers

decent wages in a timely manner and Jews have a long history of

fighting for the rights of workers. Furthermore, as Jews, we are told

that we must treat our workers decently and justly.

I just realized that some writers are giving the impression that AgriProcessors is located in some remote banana republic writing its own rules and abusing their workers on a daily basis. Etc.

Is any one here aware that the US Government always has over two dozen USDA inspectors constantly in the plant?

Have we forgotten that multiple agencies (including OSHA) paid regular visits to the plant?

Is any aware that the illegal workers owned homes in Iowa. Obtained mortgages. Drove cars. Received free medical benefits. Their children attended public schools. They played on their sport teams competing with other counties.

In other words-

The Federal Government,

The State of Iowa

The County

The City

were all aware of these people.

I guess they (all agencies and authorities, including Motor Vehicles, banks, etc.) never asked themselves if the papers presented by these workers were in order.

Yet they were issued: mortgages, licensees, school entrance cards.

But, at least in the opinion of BBYO, it is Agri-Processors that is only culprit!

Maybe Moses has a point.

Stan, I respect your position, but if you are really honest with your self and you mean what you say - you should not go to any restaurant/grocery store unless you check how much workers are getting paid and if their work day is no more then 8 hours etsc. And final question – do you keep Kosher? I bet you do not!

Stan,

Are so convinced that what you write is the truth?

Are you ready to testify in court under oath that “the company hired illegal workers so as to insure it would not have to provide its workforce their legal rights, including honest wages”?

Or perhaps you came to that conclusion after reading the media reports?

Or perhpas a mind reader?

Let me remind the audience here, there no single restaurant or grocery store in NYC that does not have illegal workers! That is why Meyer Bloomberg met with US Senate committee, asking them not to do any actions against them, as it will heart City economy!!! People, why you did not scream out loud then??? It was all over the news! It looks to me the issue here is not “illegal workers”, but Ruther ‘Jews who eat Kosher’ vs. “Jews who hate Kosher”.

I read on line:

“The B’nai B’rith Youth Organization, which will have some 900 Jewish teens at its three overnight camps this summer, says that it is boycotting the company’s meat”.

I think that is cruel. Reminiscent of darker times in history when boycotts against Jews were rampant. And more recent, of Arab boycott of Israeli products.

The only thing Agri-Processors has been accused of so far is hiring illegal workers.

I would advise your camp administrator to make sure that the kitchen and maintenance staff at all your camps have their papers in order.

If i were an Agri-Processor shareholder I would make sure that the ICE/Homeland security raid every site of B’nai B’rith this summer.

When that is done, all your USA offices should be next.

Woe to the BB if they find an illegal worker at thier branches.

BB will of course scream “anti-Semitism”.

Yes. Of course.

ICE vs. B’nai B’rith is anti-Semitism.

B’nai B’rith vs. Agri- Processors is “standing up for human rights.”

I strongly applaud the position taken by teens of BBYO!

And I am absolutely appalled at the obvious strategy adoped by Agriprocessors and its high-powered PR team: attack this youth organization with a truckload of murky spin about how sinful it is to “gossip” about this “innocent” corporation “before all the facts are known.” Plenty are ugly facts are already known! Should we look the other way just because the company produces kosher products?

If Agriprocessors would put just a small fraction of the time and money it is spending to attack BBYO into improving working conditions at their plant, it would truly be a step toward Tikkum Olam.

Yeah , right!

Who are you kidding?

Like al;l of a sudden these teen rise out of the woodwork calling and screaming about agro=processors?!

Gimme a break.

The overall policy of convicting before a trial is itself, dumb.

Hey!

Ever look at the president’s policy? He would like to “stem the flow” of illegal aliens while talks about a fence for two years and has never had one built. He allows illegals to cross into the U.S. knowingly EVERY day. Yet, Rubashkin is a bum for hiring them? It’s the best thing that ever happened to these people. And the Social Security Administration is glad with illegals, because even people with false social security numbers and cards are still paying into the system anyway!

Wow, it is amazing to see how quickly everyone resorts to name-calling here. The idea of keeping kosher is to bring an awareness and holiness to the miracle of plenty. How anyone can do so in the knowledge - or even suspicion - of abusive working conditions and mistreatment is incomprehensible to me. Kudos to BBYO for realizing that Jewish law is concerned with both the letter *and* the spirit.

If I were a Jewish teenager reading this blogpost and its comments, I would learn the following things:

(1) When you have a principled disagreement with someone, expand the conflict as widely as possible. A global war of us-vs-them is always preferable to a manageable grievance.

(2) It’s okay to launch semi-libelous personal attacks on people with whose professional politics and practices you disagree.

(3) Judaism has nothing whatsoever to do with care for the worker and working conditions. All of those words in the Torah and the Talmud about treating workers with respect and paying them proper wages on time are just suggestions.

Thanks to Marilyn Sneiderman and the BBYO, many teens are learning a better lesson: just because it’s kosher doesn’t make it right.

We all should be speaking out against the immigration, labor, environmental, and human rights abuses that have been documented at the agriprocessors plant. BBYO is teaching kids about real life activism and how all of us should work to make our world a better and more just place.

It is little short of fascinating, in a traffic pileup sort of way, to watch the BBYO Red Pioneer comminterns here chanting in unison “Down with the oppressors!” The party central committee must be happy with their legions of useful idiots.

Lessee, just how interested in individual worker rights is the former AFL-CIO Propaganda Minister?

If I had introduced Marilyn Sneiderman after June 2, I would have pointed out how great the California unions did in obtaining a real field mobilization of its members to defeat the vicious Proposition 226 that was intended to silence unions’ political voice.

And just what was so nefarious about Prop. 226 that motivated Comrade Sneiderman to militate against it so vociferously?Requires all employers and labor organizations to obtain employee’s or member’s permission before withholding wages or using union dues or fees for political contributions. Employee’s or member’s permission is to be obtained annually using a prescribed form. Requires record keeping.

Nope, cannot have the rank-and-file having a voice in how their union dues are spent. That must be left to inner party members only. We know what’s best for them. I am sure the same sentiment is worming its way in to this current Agriprocessor campaign.

Great job BBYO! I support and admire this important stance taken by BBYO & its leadership to raise awareness among Jewish youth that the laws of Kashrut cannot be separated from ethics and justice. Rubashkin’s terrible record of worker exploitation is a deep contradiction, deserving of scrutiny and protest by all Jews, both young and old. In fact, the situation reminds me of the Biblical quote from Isaiah 58, where G-d poses a question to the Jewish people about what kind of fast He is really after – “Is it a day for a man to afflict his soul? Is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? Wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD?” Of course not. It is a fast “to loose the fetters of wickedness, to undo the bands of the yoke, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke…[and] to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house…” (Isaiah 5: 5-7).

So, along these lines, I’m asking myself – is this Rubashkin’s kashrut that G-d intended – “one that oppresses immigrant workers with excessively long hours and low wages?” Or is it a type of Kashrut that respects both workers and the natural environment – that is both socially just and ecologically sound.

I have to say some of the comments were outright amusing – I mean, calling the BBYO participants “revolutionaries”? APRPEH, you have got to be kidding me. And Jacob, I totally disagree with your points, but you might be taken a tad more seriously if you took checked your spelling.

Also, according to the Jerusalem Post, the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism and the Rabbinical Assembly (not what I’d call radical organizations) say Jews should consider for themselves whether or not to buy the meat from Rubashkin’s (see http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1211434112899&pagename=JPost/JPArticle/ShowFull) so that is exactly what these BBYO youth are doing!

If BBYO’s staff and youth leaders really cared about social justice they would forgo serving meat all together.

Not only is the slaughter of animals cruel and unnecessary, but the mass production of meat, particularly beef, contributes to the global food crisis as it takes up to 16 pounds of grain to produce one pound of meat, far more water to produce meat than plant-based food, and the environmental impact through waste runoff, soil degradation and methane emissions.

BBYO is taking a half-asked approach by simply just changing their meat supplier.

To Gregory F:

It appears it is the 5W team of professional pr hacks hired by Rubashkin that are attacking a bunch of kids from BBYO for standing up for their belief in Tikkum Olam.

I agree that a person is innocent until proven guilty. But tell me this: If every official at Agriprocessors is so innocent, why did a supervisor at the plant flee the country?

It seems that we have Uri Tzedek’s team posting up here, accusing AgriProcessors of everything once again. Do they know that the Immigration Service had to let innocent people go after holding them up for 5 weeks in jail?

Regarding B’nai Brith, its sad that they are not working with the number one meatpacking company in Iowa anymore. I don’t feel that a large Jewish business should suffer from a Camp returning food after a long time of providing quality kosher products to other high schools, camps, and organizations throughout the country.

I think its great that people are finally accepting our jewish heritage.

If we don’t look out for people being mistreated here in this country, who is going to look out for us later?

Its ridiculous, after all of these facts have been stated including government fines against the plant, that people are still talking about how “no facts have come out yet”

If they are signing on to Uri L’Tzedek’s petition, all they are asking for is that Agri produce the document on worker protection that company reps promised to deliver to at the 6/11 meeting and for the company to ask Jim Martin, the compliance officer, to be transparent about the work he is doing.

There is no condemnation, no victimization, no execution happening here!

What is the hold up at Agri? Why will they not provide the documents they promised????

If BBYO members are concerned they should contact the meat company and seek answers for their concerns. If after they investigate firsthand and discover that there are real issues then they can consider action.

I wonder if they have done this. Or are they just part of this rush to judgment based on unsubstantiated allegations and innuendo. Jewish Law is clear that you cannot judge something until you hear both sides.

Instead of teaching their members to seek truth and hear the whole story they are becoming part of some in the liberal Jewish community that clearly have agenda taht is inimical to Jewish tradition.

Has anyone at BBYO tried to talk to Agriprocessors directly? Has anyone at BBYO asked for someone to come and address what the company sees, how it is addressing matters, and so on?

Perhaps these events are just to further reinforce news and statements that have already been pounded rather than to seek objectivity, pursue dialogue understand what is and has been done, as well as what is in the process of being done to right wrongs, correct flaws and build faith a stronger foundations.

If that is the case, as suggested in a post above (as this being in response to other organizations’ efforts, comments and the like) than this is merely an exercise in public action for these kids to learn how to gather and yell, and not truly an educational facility that shows children how to pursue justice for those who need it.

The pursuit of justice must be done judiciously as well. To not seek answers on their own, but to accept what some say alone, is yielding to despotic charms, and not pursuing what they seem to believe is justice.

You are all guilty of lashon hora, not a Jewish value. You have allegations, speculation, and gossip but not facts. You are a disgrace to Jewish youth worldwide.

You have jumped on a bandwagon for the thrill of the ride not realizing you are being led by a group of pied pipers into a sea of deceit and lies in the name of “justice”.

Attacking the BBYO boycott of Rubashkin chicken and meat on the basis that no “facts” have come out is ridiculous. Somehow, the Iowa Department of Transportation, the Iowa Department of Labor, the Iowa Workforce Development, and the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration have found enough facts to keep them busy with wide-ranging investigations into health and safety practices at the AgriProcessors plant.

If nothing unjust was going on there, how did it happen that nearly 20 of the immigrant employees picked up in the ICE raid on May 12 were children? If conditions were so rosy, how, between 2001 and 2006, did OSHA manage to log reports of broken bones, amputations, eyes injuries, hearing loss and other nasty injuries suffered at the plant? How, in fact, did the feds come up with enough evidence to charge AgriProcessors with 39 new health and safety violations this past March!

To look at the facts – yes, the facts—and allege that they are unjust allegations is simply ludicrous.

The true embarrassment here is the indictment of the BBYO teens. The Torah states: “Thou shalt not oppress a hired servant that is poor and needy, whether he be of thy brethren, or of thy strangers that are in thy land within thy gates (Deuteronomy 24:14). We applaud BBYO for their commitment to social justice and Jewish values.

The JTA replaced the erroneous headline it posted on June 24, “B’nai B’rith Youth Organization is calling for a boycott of Agriprocessors,” with the current headline posted June 25, “B’nai B’rith Youth Organization will abstain from Agriprocessors meat this summer.” To clarify, the teens are not calling for a “boycott” as the JTA reporter originally headlined the article, but rather asked its partners to refrain from serving BBYO participants Agriprocessor products this summer at camp, to which they complied. This position deals with the ethical and moral considerations that BBYO believes are an integral part of Jewish values.

BBYO’s decision follows a call from the U.S. Conservative movement which urged the Jewish community to consider not patronizing Agriprocessors (http://www.jta.org/cgi-bin/iowa/breaking/108713.html). BBYO is not acting unilaterally, as it has joined more than 1,000 community leaders who signed the Uri Tzedek petition at http://uriltzedek.webnode.com/information-on-the-agriprocessor-effort/sign-the-letter-to-agriprocessors/, and was based on the following undeniable facts:

1) On May 12, 389 illegal workers were arrested, among them 18 juveniles between the ages of 13 and 17 (Detainees moved from NCC grounds, Waterloo, Courier, May 15, 2008).

2) Agriprocessors was cited for 39 health and safety violations in March 2008, including amputations, eye injuries and hearing loss, despite years of public inquiry and concern over worker conditions at the plant (Agriprocessor’s Safety Problems, Des Moines Register, May 14, 2008).

“If I am not for myself, then who will be for me? And if I am only for myself, what am I? And if not now, when?” Driven by Rabbi Hillel’s call, BBYO’s teens are using this summer’s programs as an opportunity to explore the complexities of the Agriprocessor issue.

“When news broke of the raid in Postville last month, we were particularly concerned because some of the workers were kids our age,” said Evan Herron, BBYO’s International Teen Co-President. “Our teen leadership will be exploring issues raised by these events through some of our programs this summer, particularly as they relate to Jewish values and social justice.”

Although I have not met her, I am very grateful that Mrs. Sneiderman has been hired. It’s great to have more women activists pushing for a more just world in leadership positions, especially heading our holy educational programs.

It is very sad that there is a kashrut community out there that isn’t interested in these ethical sins and that they only use secular standards (absolute convition in the US court) as their moral compass.

This is an utter discrace!

Is this what we are teaching our children?? The opposite of true justice? I thought justice meant “innocent until proven guilty”?

I don’t care what this Rabbi Allen has to say. He clearly has an agenda. And that is to get an ‘in’ into the Kosher certification business.

This is an injustice to the education of these pure children and an injustice to all Jews.

As a former Jewish youth group leader (go EPA USY!) I am so impressed and proud that BBYO has taken this step. Agriprocessors has shamelessly exploited its workers - for example, taking advantage of their disempowered legal situation to pay them less than required by law and far less than it takes to raise a family, not to mention putting workers in physical danger by not adhering to safety standards.

As a Jew, I have been ashamed that a kosher meat company is behaving so egregiously and that we can call food “kosher” when it causes pain and injury to so many families. However, I’ve also been proud to see that 1300 Jewish leaders, educators, and kosher consumers have signed a petition calling out Agriprocessors for their abuses. I don’t know anything about the group organizing the petition, but their website is uriltzedek.webnode.com.

Kudos to the youth leaders of BBYO and to its staff for bringing the Jewish community and the workers in Postville one step closer to justice.

I am so proud of teens like Lauren Shenfeld who are living out our Jewish values by bringing to light the conditions at Agriprocessors. Meat processing plants across the United States are under scrutiny for labor abuses and other misdeeds. I hope that Agriprocessors listens to our young people and decides to become a leader in setting excellent standards for the industry.

Fantastic! I applaud this heroic move by the BBYO leadership and teen leaders. It is fantastic to see this great youth group movement taking a stand on such a clear moral evil (worker abuse, sexual harassment, underpaying workers, lying, deception, etc).

There is no educational programming more important than that of social justice and training our Jewish youth to be prophetic voices for truth and righteousness.

Thank you BBYO for leading the way!

The people writing here seem to be the same PR people who represent Agriprocessors for money. You can tell because they use the same hackneyed arguments over and over again.

BBYO: don’t be fooled by these professional stoogies.

Justice is justice and you are doing the right thing!

In the early sixties leaders of the Jewish community were against student involvement in the struggle for black rights. It wasn’t until large numbers of students and a few brave Rabbis stood up that the Jewish community “leaders” changed course and remembered the Torah.

When Jews came to America we worked in sweatshops and lived in poverty. Connecting Jewish teens to their own history and giving them a chance to help new immigrants improve their lives should be encouraged not discouraged.

A former director for a branch of the AFL-CIO Union, organizing Jewish youth? Convincing the youth to boycott a Jewish company that produces Kosher products. Amazing.

Ben Harris what is your agenda??

It does not appear to be impartial reporting.

The thesaurus uses synonyms of “fairness, impartiality, even-handedness, fair play” for the word “justice”.

You guys have missed the mark and you are misleading hundreds of Jewish youth to do the same.

The Jewish value of not condemning and executing someone until the facts come out has also been laid aside.

Your leadership should be ashamed of themselves.

How can we trust anyone anymore based on all of this information and misinformation? Agri says this, Shmarya, JTA and Forward say that, and all of the bloggers say other ridiculous things.

The raid on Agriprocessors has become more of a witch hunt, and even more of a game of broken telephone. This whole debate is lashon hora, because no one has printed bona fide facts, it’s all hearsay.

The blog editor here claims to know the truth, the PR guys claim to know the truth, and the pseudo experts here claim to know the truth.

The truth is that some of what is claimed against the meat processors are true and need to be fixed, while a lot of it is rumor designed to besmirch the movement Chabad and organized orthodox so-called “organizations”.

This fight, and it is a fight, is not one that ought to be fought by a food maker/distributor, but between the rabbis, religions, streams and the consumers to see whether an idea of a hechser tzedek warranted, but more so, is even doable. Where are lines drawn, who makes the rules, is a “little bit” illegal, the same as a little bit pregnant, is immoral, my morals, your morals, Avi Weiss’ or Morris Allan’s, Avi Shafran’s?

Asking for a hechser tzedek is a big deal, because once you declare it and firm it up, can Avi Weiss still eat at the Rivedale Pizza shop if the guy who sweeps or flips the dough is illegal? Can Morris Allan’s synagogue be considered treif because the janitor’s wife is illegal (not saying that any of this is the case)? Can I buy my tzitit at the Judaica store where a Mexican is crushing boxes in the back?

Shmarya says its a 70%/20% in another post here. he says its not about Federally illegal, but more of a moral code. So if shmarya says one guys’s use of illegals is good because he pays them better wages, doe sthat rise to the level of Avi Weiss’ level of Uri LTzedek - which asks for U.S. legal guidelines?

The questions here are not meant to be sarcastic, but will certainly be answered that way. They will get torn apart and mocked, my motives will be too, all in an attempt to deflect the true questions here. Can tzedek work, who will be the enforcers, and is the use of this company as the posterchild for non tzedek - the rumors, gossip and destruction of people’s lives, livelihoods and reputations - contrary to the whole point of tzedek in the first place?

Or, to paraphrase a famous Kohen, “do the needs of the many, outweigh the needs of the few?” Do we continue to be counter to tzdek, using these people until they are destroyed for the purpose of building a greater call for Tzedek?

Tear away people…

What an outrageous claim to make, nothing has been established as fact, yet it is repeated as if it is.

“make their voices heard against the intolerable injustices at Agriprocessors”

This is an embarrassment to Jewish education and youth.

“Teens make concerted effort to expand summer program curricula to address the Agriprocessor issue from variety of angles, including the ritual and ethical implications of kashrut, worker’s rights, immigration reform and Jewish values.”

Oh? What about the Jewish value of not condemning and executing someone before the facts come out?

“on Thursday, June 26, 11:45 am – 1:15 pm, when nearly 100 Jewish teens will gather at Beber Camp in Mukwonago, Wisconson (suburban Milwaukee) to make their voices heard against the intolerable injustices at Agriprocessors.”

What about the **alleged** intolerable injustices?

This letter had me scratching my head until I read the name signed at the end. BBYO and former director for Field Mobilizaion for the AFL-CIO is bringing her old job to her new one, it seems. She’s mobilizing BBYO to help boycott a non-union business. Is this mixing business and pleasure, or is it business and business?

Either way, it stinks.
