Shas rabbi: Punish unmarried males over age 20

  • Here's a novel suggestion that would slow the haredization of Jerusalem from an unlikely source: Rabbi Yaakov Yosef, son of Shas spiritual leader Ovadia Yosef, proposes that unmarried haredi men over the age of 20 be banished from Jerusalem as punishment for "their refusal to marry and provide for a family," Ynet reports.
  • The Israeli city of Kiryat Gat is considering changing its flag because it looks to much like the flag of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ynet reports.
  • The Israeli Arab city of Nazareth hopes the pope's upcoming visit will be a boon to tourism, the Washington Post reports.

I may regret this but...I actually agree with you Sallai Levinsohn.  I would be married today if the woman I love would marry me, but because I won’t marry a woman I don’t love I remain unmarried.  I refuse to be simply cattle for the herdsman.

Wait, is he the haredi politician who claimed that earthquakes were caused by Israelis skipping Shabbat, or the one who insisted that the swine flu be called “Mexican flu” because pork is non-kosher, or the one who announced that the Holocaust was caused by non-Orthodox Jews? I forget.

But I suppose that since these people are “our” religious extremists, they’re a-okay. Until they get a majority some day, that is…

Mr. Matt,

You’re pretty close.  The proposal to ban 20 yearn old singles was made by the son of that pro-holocaust ‘rabbi’ who said that Ha Shoah was G!D’s punishment for the Reform Movement.  Never mind that almost all the victims of Ha Shoah were of the Orthodox stream, and that hardly any Reformers were captured, let alone killed.

For the record, plenty of non-Orthodox Jews were. captured, deported, and
murdered.  Goodly numbers of Jews of Liberal, Neolog, and Reform streams
from Germany, Austria, Hungary, etc, died in the Shoah.  German Jews had a
greater warning period, 1933, and weren’t stuck in the same numbers as say
Polish Jewry who found themselves suddenly in grave danger from the German
invasion of 1939.  But hardly any Reformers, unfortunately that just isn’t true.

This the guy’s father? The apple really doesn’t fall far from the tree, does it?

“These are people who do not have Torah, people who want civil marriages, shops that sell pork, and the army enlistment of yeshiva students. ... Whoever does so commits an intolerable sin. Whoever does so supports Satan and the evil inclination.” --Ovadia Yosef, in 2009

“The six million Holocaust victims were reincarnations of the souls of sinners, people who transgressed and did all sorts of things that should not be done. They had been reincarnated in order to atone.” --Ovadia Yosef, in 2000

“There was a tsunami and there are terrible natural disasters, because there isn’t enough Torah study… Black people reside there [New Orleans]. Blacks will study the Torah? [God said], Let’s bring a tsunami and drown them… Hundreds of thousands remained homeless. Tens of thousands have been killed. All of this because they have no God… Bush was behind the [expulsion of] Gush Katif, he encouraged Sharon to expel Gush Katif… We had 15,000 people expelled here [in Israel], and there [in America] 150,000 [were expelled]. It was God’s retribution… God does not short-change anyone.” --Ovadia Yosef, in 2005

“They don’t observe the Sabbath, they don’t observe the Torah, they don’t pray, they don’t put on phylacteries every day. Is it any wonder that they’re killed? It’s no wonder. May the Almighty have mercy on them and bring them back to religion.” --Ovadia Yosef, 2006, on fallen Israeli soldiers
