The N.Y. Times’ call to action—for everyone but the Palestinians
The lead editorial in today's New York Times calls on Ehud Olmert to freeze all Jewish settlement expansion in the West Bank and ease Palestinian movement obstructed by Israeli roadblocks.
It also calls on the Israeli prime minister's likely successors to "behave responsibly" and negotiate a two-state solution with the Palestinians. And it says "A way must be found to help turn Hamas into a legitimate and acceptable negotiating partner."
Israeli politicians must work with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to strengthen his hand vis-a-vis Hamas and other extremists, Arab countries must press Hamas to be more responsible, and President Bush must press Israel and the Palestinian Authority to do what's necessary to secure a peace deal, the editorial says.
Why do the N.Y. Times editorialists put the onus for action on all parties except for the Palestinians?

The New York Times has become a shameful example of bias and hypocracy in the media. I’m embarrassed to know that the NY Times is an American newspaper. It’s no wonder that it is losing ad revenue by the bundle and that its business and stock price are failing.
The Palestinians and others with whom Israel is at war have made it clear that a return to ‘67 borders and a just solution for the Palestinian refugees is an acceptable solution to end the conflict. It’s Israel that wants more and thinks it can get it through illegal settlements and annexations.
I question the bias of the NY Times. Have they not read that Hamas is not interested in peace with Israel, but is dedicated to its destruction? Hamas has not mitigated this retoric, rather criticizes other Arabs that talk peace with Israel. I subscribe to the NY Times, but I question if this is a newspaper I want to be associated with when it does portray the news in a fair representation of the facts.
Israel is not defending itself in the international arena largely because of the incompetency of the Olmert government. Haven’t we learned
by now? When Jews step down Anti-semitism steps up. Noone will defend Jews or the Jewish state but ourselves. It’s past time to tell the NY Times and the world NEVER AGAIN!!! (Refresh their memories
1] For some time the NYT has not been the paper of record but rather the paper of record losses. Thus, why does anybody even pay attention what they scribble on their editorial pages?
2] Why should any clear-thinking person be surprised that leftist liberalism and anti-Semitism go hand-in-hand? When I perused the NYT on occasion in the 70’s and 80’s I called it the NY Pravda!
3] Why are there still so many Jews, dumb enough to vote for a party (the Social-Democrats) where racism, anti-Semitism and anti-Israelism are rampant and on the rise??
Why am I not surprized? This is the same newspaper that printed the story of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising on page 7 in a very brief item that mentioned neither the words Jewish or ghetto. This newspaper also strongly opposed the establishment of the State of Israel. It’s owners and publishers are prime examples of Jewish anti-semitism
Your right-wing bias, as usual, is showing. What I saw in this editorial:
Criticism of Hamas: “[Hamas] does not acknowledge Israel’s right to exist, condones terrorism and refuses to be bound by past agreements between Israel and the Palestinians. A way must be found to help turn Hamas into a legitimate and acceptable negotiating partner.” In other words, a way must be found to convince Hamas to change these illegitimate and unacceptable positions.
Criticism of Fatah: “Even in the West Bank, Mr. Abbas’s position is far from secure. Israel is right to insist that he take strong measures to contain extremists. He can win the political support he needs only by delivering concrete improvements in Palestinians’ daily lives and visible movement toward statehood.” In other words, Abbas is not doing enough to fight terrorism and furthermore, he is not adequately improving the daily lives of Palestinians.
(Which, by the way, is a pretty stupid contention considering that the US and Israel pressed the international community to cut aid to the PA after Hamas took power, bankrupting state agencies and sending the territories into a state of total chaos. Now Abbas is to blame for not having done more? It’s like having all your assets seized by the government and then having child services show up at your doorstep and tell you that you’re a negligent parent because you can’t feed your kids. It’s a classic Catch-22.)
Beyond your false equation of occupied and occupier—that the Times does not refer to Palestinians as “murderous thugs” and equate them with Nazis, as I’m sure you’d prefer, does not mean that they are uncritical of the Palestinians.
Who except the leftist pundits care what the NY Times has to say? The problem is we always give credence to their editorials as if it were of great importance. All their news is written in an editorial manner and truly educated people can see right through it. Let’s give the NY Times the same respect as, say, the National Enquirer! At least they got the Edward thing right!

I suspect you didn’t read the entire editorial. The last couple of paragraphs address what Abbas and the Arab countries need to do.
