With Israel having failed to rally international leaders to take action to stop Iran from going nuclear, the Jewish state is left with only one weapon in its arsenal to get the world to wake up to the Iranian nuclear threat: Bombing Iran. That, at least, is the theory Shmuel Rosner outlines in a piece in The New Republic:
According to this line of thinking, which has adherents among some high-ranking officials and former officials in the Israeli defense establishment, focusing on the tactical questions surrounding [an Israeli bombing operation against Iran]–how much of Iran’s nuclear program can Israel destroy? how many years can a bombing campaign set the program back?–is a mistake. The main goal of a hit would not be to destroy the program completely, but rather to awaken the international community from its slumber and force it to finally engineer a solution to the crisis. As one former Israeli official put it, any attack on Iran’s reactors–as long as it is not perceived as a military failure–can serve as a means of “stirring the pot” of international geopolitics. Israel, in other words, wouldn’t be resorting to military action because it is convinced that diplomacy by the international community cannot stop Iran; it would be resorting to military action because only diplomacy by the international community can stop Iran.
Hmm. Actually bombing Iran. That’s even more effective than warmongering.
If Israel actually does go ahead with a bombing run, Israeli pilots likely will face Russian-made anti-aircraft missiles in Iran, The New York Sun reports:
Apparently fearing Israel would act even before the end of the Bush administration, Iran is boosting its air defenses with advanced Russian-made antiaircraft systems. A first delivery of S-300 missile batteries is expected as soon as early September, an unidentified Israeli source told Reuters yesterday. The missiles can track 100 targets at once and fire on planes 75 miles away.
The latest Israeli warning about bombing Iran came Thursday from IDF chief of staff Gabi Ashkenazi, who is visiting Washington.

It appears to me that whatever Putin is doing is Payback time. Our government saw no problem installing missils in Poland and other countries close to Russia and No one in the administration thought of consequences. Bush had no problem invading Iraq WITHOUT finishing off the Talibans and UBL. We could have waited 2 years and THEN go into Iraq. Sadam would not have attacked in the interim. Putin has not forgotten what we did in Afghanistan. He had plenty of time and above ALL plenty of money (oil). I am sure he is working feverishly in overtaking us militarily. We should no longer be overconfident as apparently Bush etc. have been doing. We are paying the piper.
As far as bombing Iran. This is another story. This is no longer Iraq where the Israelis surprised Sadam. With all this talk the Iranians are not going to be surprised.
Pres. Clinton had sent missils into Afghanistan hoping to catch UBL. I think missils this time might br the answer. With the GPS system the sspecific are could be pinpointed without loosing the planes and pilots.
This is the most idiotic idea I have ever read on this issue. If the raid is ineffective Israel will suffer mighty retaliation from a nation equiped with long range missles as well as a hail of shorter range missles fired by their cousins in Lebanon.
To suffer this, and to ask Israels piolts to run the anti-aircraft gauntlet is ridiculous and arrogant. People (even Iranians or Arabs) shoot back, sometimes effectively. This is not a game.
When the missles begin to fall on Israel, whom will she appeal to for assistance? The same international community that refuses to take a stand against Iran now?
The only way to do this is to play for keeps and to plan for every eventuality. When the risks have been reduced as much as possible, Israels leaders must weight the COSTS and the benefits of such actions.
The starting point for defusing the nuclear cycle issue with Iran is simply a pledge of security for Iran. If the world cannot protect Iran, then can we force Iran not to protect herself?
Benny Morris Israeli historian said: Killing of Millions of Iranians by Israeli Nuke is justified. Should we set example and require Israel to eliminate her nuclear bombs?

Israel should really be very careful in their thinking on going through with this. Look what has happened with the USA in Iraq. This could open up a can of worms that no one has ever foreseen. I think that gov’ts rely too heavyilly on so-called classified intelligence. So many examples could be given. So many cases in Iraq. UBL in NY on 9-11. AND don’t forget all the back in when the USA’s arch enemy, the Soviet Union, fell with in 48 hours, and SUPPOSEDLY, all the billions of $$$ spent on our intelligence agencies, NO agency for saw this as getting ready to occur. It has publicly admitted that the USA knows there are “sleepers” inside the country just waiting for the word from Iran to do their deeds. An attack on Iran by Israel will cost the USA, also, because we are seen as a friend of Israel and obviously support them on the supply side of the military.
I was in the military in the first Iraq war back in the early 1990’s and there is just an endless list of reports that I read prior to the start that never actually occured. Remember Iraq’s fearsome army that turned out to actually be slave labor and actually were surrendering to television camera’s and remote air vehicles. There were not even being fed. I’m just saying Iran may have something up it’s sleaves. Governments have publically admitted that there are nukes(suitcase sized) that are un-accounted for after the USSR fell. We all heard certain military goods went to the highest bidder whether they be terrorist or whoever.
Proof of “sleepers” in various countries or self country hating people has been proven in Israel with the two last bulldozer attacks. Who else is already within Israel and the USA’s borders just waiting for the big war which has been felt as coming for my entire generation.
This hatred has been waiting to come out of the box every since the UN let Israel come back to existence or was it the one in the clouds who caused this. I believe the latter.
This could get very nasty and biblically, this may finally prove what the WORD has foretold for thousands of years.
The only thing the Iranians will understand is being bombed-everything else is a misguided and dangerous delusion
The trouble with using missles against Iran is distance. They surely already have the technology to spot them , and destroy most of them before they get there, Planes on the otherhand have the capability of flying below radar (maybe).???
Or Maybe They will have a regime change, but I wouldn’t count on that any time soon
When Iran goes nuclear will be the beginning of the end of Israel. It will also see the decline of Western, especially US influence in Asia. It will encourage Pakistani aggression against India and provide a safe haven in Afghanisan again for the Talibaan. It will encourage Saudi Arabia to go nuclear as well to compete for the leadership of the Muslim world on behalf of Wahabism and it will lead to greater Mohammedan aggression world-wide against Western democracies. Syria, Lebanon and the PA will more aggressively pursue Israel’s destruction under Iran’s nuclear umbrella.
People talking about peace with Iran are avoiding reality. The international community cannot afford to have nuclear weapons in the hands of a nation lead by a man who yells down a well asking for a five year old Imam hidden a thousand years ago to emerge. We cannot fear an oil crisis which will come sooner or later when Iran is nuclear, nor sleeper cells which will only proliferate and grow stronger over time. And any nation, even Russia is playing with fire in arming a regime as fantical as Iran.
The argument that not all of Iran’s nuclear facilities can be hit (or discovered) is off the mark. Taking out a few will disrupt the Iranian program and supplementing it with taking out some oil pumping equipment and power generators plus sending in dissident groups will see the rule of ayatollahs undermined by exposing it as blustering aggressors whose misrule brought misfortune.
Bomb them now!!
Starting an atomic war is totally unthinkable for rational men!
The starting point for defusing the nuclear cycle issue with Iran is simply a pledge of security for Iran.
Iran submitted a package to the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in mid-May 2008 as well as to world powers, including Russia and the United States. The proposal suggests “the creation of uranium enrichment consortiums in various countries, including Iran.” It also requires that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) step up its supervision of nuclear sites around the world and asserts that more should be done to ensure nuclear programs would not diverted materials for fabrication of nuclear bomb.
“Thomas Pickering, the US ambassador to the United Nations under President George H.W. Bush, endorsed the idea of such a consortium in a March article in the New York Review of Books.” And the plan is “getting increased interest from senior members of both parties in Congress and nonproliferation specialists”[Boston Globe June 10].
Senators Dianne Feinstein, a California Democrat, and Chuck Hagel, a Nebraska Republican, have said publicly that the consortium plan should be explored. Representative Edward J. Markey, a Malden Democrat, went further, calling the plan “a creative, thoughtful, and productive potential solution.”
Robert Naiman, Tue Jun 17, 3:08 PM ET, NYT Exposes Fraud of “Generous Offer” to Iran reported: “The same PIPA poll found that 58% of Iranians support the idea of making a deal with the UN Security Council that would allow Iran to have a full-cycle nuclear program while giving the International Atomic Energy Agency “permanent and full access throughout Iran to ensure that its nuclear program is limited to energy production” and not producing nuclear weapons. PIPA notes that in a March 2008 poll for the BBC World Service 55% of Americans approved of such a deal.”
“In April, the Program on International Policy Attitudes at the University of Maryland published a poll of Iranian public opinion. PIPA found that 81% of Iranians consider it “very important” for “Iran to have a full-fuel-cycle nuclear program” which would give Iran the capacity to produce nuclear fuel for energy production. Four out of five. Only 5% think Iran should not pursue a full-fuel-cycle program.”
If the basis for the 6-nation negotiation with Iran over her nuclear fuel cycle is enforcement of the United Nations Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT), then the Iranian proposal has fully achieved the objective.
President Bush often stated that everything is on the table unless Iran stops nuclear fuel cycle activities. He further has asserted that his administration would only talk with Iran after the nuclear fuel cycle activities verifiably had been stopped. Iranian people have consistently rejected his precondition for diplomatic negotiation. He is using the 6-nation as a fake diplomacy knowing that Iran will not stop her nuclear fuel cycle activities. Iranians consider the nuclear fuel cycle a part of their national energy independence.
Israel and the United States advocate that Iran would be dangerous learning about nuclear technology; what if they use this knowledge sometimes in the future and make nuclear bombs. Israel, whose nuclear arsenals and airplane to deliverer the devices were subsidized mostly by USA, has been assured by both Republican and Democratic candidates that if Iranians would ever develop any nuclear bomb and if she would use the bomb on Israel, we will obliterate Iran to dust.
Israel and USA are insisting that unless Iran stops their nuclear fuel cycle, jointly they will destroy their country. It is reported that President Bush may not allow Western-made technology required for Iran’s oil industry, creating bottlenecks in Iran’s oil production. This action will result in increase of price of gas to a $10 per gallon and disruption of the International market. Also, it is reported that President Bush may consider a naval embargo of the Persian Gulf. This action is declaration of war and attacking Iran, the beginning of the World War III.
Should we set example and require Israel to eliminate her nuclear bombs. President Truman said: “Starting an atomic war is totally unthinkable for rational men.” [Truman, public Papers]. Benny Morris Israeli historian said: Killing of Millions of Iranians by Israeli Nuke is Justified. If the world cannot protect Iran, then can we force Iran not to protect herself?
Israel has certainly forgoten how to defend itself when its begun handing over terrorists in exchange for corpses.
