Pop songstress/tabloid fixture Amy Winehouse is contemplating recording a Chanukah album. Her producer, Mark Ronson, recently told Rolling Stone:
“We’re talking about making a holiday record, with Christmas songs on one side and Hanukkah songs on the other,” Ronson explained. “She’s got songs called, like, ‘Kosher Kisses’ and ‘Alone Under the Mistletoe.’ She was kind of f–king around, but I was like, ‘You have all these amazing records to play for Christmas, like Motown and Carla Thomas and the Charlie Brown Christmas, and unfortunately, us Jews have nothing that cool to listen to. So we should do something.”
Yet despite the buzz around the project and around Winehouse’s Jewish identity in-and-of-itself, according to Paul Lester, a contributor to London’s Jewish Chronicle, the singer refuses to grant the Chronicle an interview because she wishes to remain disassociated from the Jewish community.
There’s only one Jewish performer who has declined the offer of an interview with me for the JC over the past 12 months, and that was Amy Winehouse. Her reason? She didn’t want to be associated with the paper, the Jewish community it serves, or indeed any of it. This struck me as strange, particularly after watching her appearance on Never Mind the Buzzcocks, during which the Helen Shapiro of the crack’n'tats generation joked with presenter Simon Amstell about the prospect of the pair of them having a Jewish wedding; stranger still in the light of the news of a mooted Chanukah album with producer Ronson.
Or maybe Winehouse just didn’t want to get involved in a serious discussion about the nature of belief and the role of religion in modern Jewish society.
Whatever her reasons, one can nonetheless remain hopeful that Winehouse, a nominee for six Grammy awards, will do a great deal to raise the bar for Jewish holiday music, let alone to help younger listeners feel more comfortable identifying Jewishly (even if she is less-than role model material in other ways).
Winehouse may also end up an unintentional ambassador for peace. Mika, one of the UK’s other top recording artists, who so happens to be half-Lebanese and a native of Beirut, has expressed interest in collaborating with Winehouse on her Chanukah album. The Asian News Service quoted the singer as saying: “Think about this: me, a part-Lebanese artist working on a Jewish album. I think that’s a nice statement.”

Why do Jews even care about this drug-addicted nut who doesn’t care one bit about the Jewish community? Amy has always been a self-hating Jew and nothing will change that. Let’s ignore her and move on. It’s not like Amy is someone that Jews should be proud of.
We should give attention to righteous Gentiles like John Voight who has done many positive things for the Jewish community. He’s more “Jewish” than Amy Winehouse anyway.
Why do only crazy people leave comments on JTA’s website?
There is nothing crazy about my comments. The truth is the truth. I’m not sorry if I hurt the feelings of an Amy Winehouse fan. You’re obviously an idiot or drunk who can’t comprehend anything above a kindergarden level! You’re a loser!
What evidence can you provide to support your contention that “Amy has always been a self-hating Jew and nothing will change that”? Do you have an intimate relationship with Amy Winehouse, in which she revealed to you her feelings towards Judaism and the Jewish community? Or are you basing your position on the remarks of a jaded reporter who couldn’t score an interview with one of the biggest (and most troubled) celebrities in the UK?
Concerning Amy’s troubles, or what you have described as her status as a “drug-addicted nut,” it is my understanding that Judaism professes compassion for the ill and downtrodden. It does not promote bemoaning and dismissing those who are suffering.
And what makes John Voight a righteous gentile? His endorsement of the terrorist Rudy Giuliani, and his fundamentalist Christian-derived beliefs that Jews should vote for Rudy because he’s “good for Israel”? Being a whacko who believes that the Jews must control all of biblical-territorial Israel so that Jesus can come back and kill or convert us all makes you a better Jew than a Jew who’s turned off by organized Jewry?
And really, “You’re obviously an idiot or drunk who can’t comprehend anything above a kindergarden level! You’re a loser!” Have you not just proved my point about your craziness? Is that how a rational person reacts?
Worse yet, you sully the name of all Zionists by adopting the monicker “Zionist” thereby tarring all Zionists with the vile nonsense you spew.
So Amy Winehouse does not want to talk to Paul Lester what is the big deal.
It seems that Paul Lester is acting like a really kid, if Winehouse does not want to be interviewed by him for the Jewish Chronicle so what, that is her choice.
Stan;
It’s obvious that you’re a radical left-winger. I don’t even think you’re even a Jew. I read some of your other comments and you’re definately a nutso. The vile crap you write on this blog could be written by the Plo.
Guiliani a terrorist? What are you smoking? I bet you think that 9/11 was an inside job committed by Bush or the Joos! Jon Voight is anything but a Fundamentalist Chrsitian. He’s Catholic and is socially liberal. He has helped many Jewish charities and is big supporter of Israel.
I know a lot more about Amy Winehouse than you do. I was visiting England when she made it big there and she showed her Jew shame early. Amy has refused to be interviewed by any Jewish media and has said she would never marry a Jew. In an interview with Rolling Stone she laughed when her husband made derogatory comments against Jews. Amy has also called Jewish traditions and customs, “a bunch of crap.” Amy is the definition of a self-hating Jew.
1. Giuliani is a terrorist because he attempted to terrorize the public into supporting his candidacy by claiming that an attack on America would be imminent were he not elected.
2. Pray tell, what have I ever written on this blog that could have been written by the PLO? I’ve left four comments on this blog ever and every comment I ever left on the Election blog was made in the defense of Israel.
3. I challenge you to provide a single link that supports any of your contentions about Winehouse.
4. You are getting crazier by the minute.
So I’m crazy because I write the truth? You’re an idiot! You’re definition of terrorism is illogical. Look up the word in the dictionary and actually learn what the word really means.
Everything I wrote about Amy Winehouse is the true. I read her quotes in the British media and even the reporters were shocked at how much Jew shame she has. I can’t provide links to those newspapers because they don’t provide archives.
You wrote pro-Israel comments? What a joke! You’re either a drunk or insane, probably both.
