Looking at why Orthodox Jews have gone GOP

John McCain’s overwhelming 78-13 percent lead over Barack Obama among Orthodox Jews in this week’s American Jewish Committee poll was just the latest example of how Orthodox Jews – at least at the presidential level – have become strong backers of the GOP.

The reason? For Orthodox Jews, Israel is far and away the most important issue – and they have supported President George W. Bush’s handling of it, according to four Orthodox Jewish Democrats on a panel this week at the National Jewish Democratic Council’s Washington Conference. The panel also agreed, however, that Democrats could win some of them back.

“The Orthodox community is dramatically more concerned about Israel” than the rest of the Jewish community,” said Democratic pollster Mark Mellman. “They’re almost united in having Israel as a preeminent concern,” compared to other Jewish voters for whom Israel is one of a number of issues.

Kean University political science professor Gil Kahn added that for the modern Orthodox community, Israel takes on greater importance because many of them have childen and other family members who have made aliyah.

That emphasis on Israel has combined with other factors to create the Republican surge. Kahn noted that a high percentage of Orthodox Jews have decided to back McCain because they’re listiening to Israeli Orthodox Jews, many of whom have said they are more comfortable with a president they’ve known for many years than a relative newcomer like Obama.

There’s also been a change in the last decade in Republican language on Israel. After Newt Gingrich was elected Speaker of the House , Republicans “began speaking about Israel in eschatological terms,” said Rabbi Menachem Genack, CEO and rabbinic administrator of OU Kosher.

Mellman noted that Orthodox Jews also fit into the general shift in political party alignment in recent years – from being dictated by a voter’s economic situation (richer generally meant Republican) to based on cultural issues such as attendance at religious services (more religious means more Republican).

The panelists downplayed abortion specifically as a major factor in the Orthodox shift to the right, but said the differences in tone the two parties strike on values – a “sense of moral absolutism versus a sense of moral relativism” – was important. Democratic rhetoric such as “no one should tell you what to do with your body” is not language to which Orthodox Jews can relate, said Mellman.

No one thought the Orthodox community was a lost cause for Democrats, though. First of all, Kahn noted that Orthodox Jews still support plenty of Democratic candidates below the presidential level.

Another panelist offered some tips to the party. Democrats “need to have a big enough tent,” said Rabbi Yeruchim Silber, vice president of community affairs for the Metropolitan Jewish Health System, to make those who don’t agree with them on social issues more comfortable. He praised the party for allowing the anti-abortion Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.) to speak at this year’s Democratic convention.

He also suggested the Democrats look at their stance on school choice. “It’s a crushing burden” paying for Jewish day school for multiple children, and whether it is vouchers, tuition tax credits or some other solution, the issue is a crucial one in the Orthodox community, Silber said. He added that emphasizing areas in which Democrats are in tune with the Orthodox community – such as backing for more affordable housing and increased funding for higher education – would also be effective.

He pointed out that Orthodox voters can change – recalling that Hillary Clinton didn’t receive much Orthodox support in her first Senate race in 2000, but had completely reversed that six years later.

Mellman agreed. “No one should give up on the Orthodox community” among Democrats, he said. “If we have a Democratic president like Barack Obama who is a strong supporter of Israel,” then “Democrats four years from now, eight years from now, will be in a much better position with the Orthodox community than we are today.”

J. Rubies, Black Liberationists (like Obama’s pastor of twenty years, J.Wright) rewrite the Bible to say Jesus was a Black African, not a Jew and that the Jews are not the Chosen People. They blame Jews for taking part in the transAtlantic slave trade and for owning diamond mines during South African apartheid. This “Theology” has more to do with South American leftist ideology than with Christianity. Educate yourself:

“This is no different than paying for......a military you may have little to do with”. Just struck me the depth of ignorance of people like the woman above, Carol Brumer, who made this statement. Like spitting on the graves of the millions of Americans who have died just so she can live the way she wants. Maybe she’s not American - hopefully not.

Sydni, Pegler was a leading voice against the Nazis in the 1930’s.

“Suffer Little Children” by Westbrook Pegler 1936

PRAGUE, CZECHOSLAVAKIA—The most pathetic victims of Adolph Hitler’s slow massacre of the Jews in Germany are the children of the Jews who are too young to know what it is all about. These children are subjected to a method of torture far worse than the baby killing which was charged against the German infantry in the early days of the Great War in cartoons depicting little bodies wriggling on the bayonets of the marching armies.

It finally was shown that the German soldier, Michael, as he was called at home, was the soul of kindness, who often shared his rations with the waifs behind the Belgian lines, and reasonable people on the Allies’ side of the fight ultimately admitted that the charge was false.

But it will be impossible ever to disprove the atrocities which are being perpetrated on the children of the Jews under the orders of Adolf Hitler as a policy of the German government of today.

The Chinese have a method of torture known as the death of a thousand cuts, in which the executioner is rated according to his ability to hack and mutilate the victim without permitting him to die until the maximum of suffering has been inflicted. They have a very good photograph of an execution by this method in the Chamber of Horrors in Madam Tussaud’s Museum in London, but most people coming upon itunsuspectingly turn away revolted, and only the most morbid vistor lingers for a second glance.

Hitler’s torture of the Jewish children is even more ingenious, however, for he has invented a way to convert the period of childhood into a term of unrelieved sorrow, fear, dread and suffering. It is commonly accepted among the civilized peoples of the world that any man who would inflict suffering on a child, wantonly or for the purposeof avenging some offense, real or imaginary, attributed to the child’s parents, or for any other reason, is not quite right mentally and ought to be put away.

We had a case of that kind in New York. An old man tortured and killed a little girl for the pleasure it gave him, and public opinion pretty well agreed that he was insane. But even in that case the suffering of the little girl was of short duration. Then she was dead. Hitler’s little victims, however, are not allowed to die. They have no such luck. Hitler keeps them alive, and they suffer day after horrible day at the hands of a nation which constantly boasts of its honor and manhood, as a matter of national policy.

The German child who is a Jew is compelled to listen to the most unspeakable vilification of his parents, and the child’s first attempts at spelling out public notices on the billboards will inform him that he is not a human being, like other children, but a beast whose parents were not human beings, either, but loathsome animals.

If the child lives in a country town where there are not sufficient Jewish children to warrant the establishment of a ghetto school in which to segregate little Jews, then the torture of the victim is even more artistic. In that case the child may be compelled to sit in the classroom and pay attention while the teacher explains that little Isadore or Rosie is a vile creature, a species of vermin and a menace to the German nation. If the teacher so desires, the Jewish child may be dismissed from the room during the lecture, in which case the Aryan children, with the characterisic cruelty of children plus the sadistic delight in the infliction of pain which is now being fostered in young Nazis, will catch the young Jew after class and tell Isadore or Rosie what the teacher said.

If the radio is turned on in the home of a Jewish family the children will hear an orator somewhere in Berlin or Munich explaining that their parents are beasts and that they are little beasts themselves.

A lone Jewish child in asmall community must play alone, for the true Nazi children, of course, will not admit him to their company, and a Gentile child with pity in his heart would be afraid to offer the victim any symapthy. He would be ostracized.

And then, of course, it is fair sport for the Nazi children to kick and beat and throw rocks at the little Jews, because that is preliminary training for one of the highest functions of Nazi citizenship and manhood in days to come.

All children have a trusting attitude toward grown people, and a harsh word may leave an ineffaceable scar on the soul of the young one. The souls of the children of the Jews of Germany willbe cross-hacked with a thousand cuts, for they will never know anything in childhood but insults to themselves and the foulest aspersions on the only adults to whom they can turn for comfort—their parents and other relatives.

It is absolutely certain that their childhood, the few hours of innocence which are given to all of us and which civilized people tru to invest with beauty and joy, has been destroyed by a man with a moustache, adopted from the makeup of a famouse comedian, who has been seriously nominated by some of his followers not for king, not merely for ruler, but for God the Redeemer of the German race. It would be a mistake to call him a baby-killer. You can’t torture a dead child.

Who is telling the truth?

Barack Obama’s advisors cast doubt on his judgment.

Sen. Barack Obama has surrounded himself with individuals whose anti-Israel views are so dangerous, naive and reckless that it raises serious questions about his judgment.

Washington, D.C. (September 29, 2008)—The Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) today released the latest in an ongoing series of national advertisements. These ads are part of a substantial advertising campaign undertaken by the RJC. This ad looks at the views of Obama’s advisers and finds a recurring theme of anti-Israel, pro-Palestinian, and in some cases anti-American views.

Sen. Barack Obama surrounds himself with a number of individuals and advisors(1) who are hostile to Israel and American Jews. They include Zbigniew Brzezinski, General Tony McPeak, Robert Malley and former Congressman David Bonior.(2) All are known either for their anti-Israel views or their pro-Arab views - or both.

Brzezinski is well known for his aggressive dislike of Israel, and has been an ardent foe of Israel for more than three decades. As recently as 2006, he placed exclusive blame on Israel for the war in Lebanon, even making the outrageous claim that “I think what the Israelis are doing in Lebanon is, in effect, the killing of hostages."(3)

Obama’s top military advisor McPeak told a newspaper that he believes Jews in Miami and New York are the obstacles to peace in the Middle East.(4)

Malley, a Palestinian apologist, invented and propagated the false claim that the 2000 Camp David summit failed because Israel wasn’t serious about giving the Palestinians a state.(5)

And former U.S. Rep. Bonior refused to stand by Israel while in Congress, after repeated terrorist attacks, and was known as a stalwart opponent to Israel.(6)

For 20 years, Obama was part of the anti-American, anti-Semitic Reverend Jeremiah Wright’s church. In fact, Obama called him his “sounding board."(7) Only after intense criticism of their relationship, Obama distanced himself from Wright.

I am horrifed that the Orthodox Jewish community would align themselves with the Republicans given that their underlying views express themselves to the contrary. I was late to learn about the anonyomous writer Sarah Palin quoted during her speech at the NRC. His name is Westbrook Paley. “A fascist, pro-Nazi, anti-semite. He denounced the civil rights movement, embraced anti-semitism and in the early 1960’s wrote for the John Birch Society, until asked to leave (the ultra conservative group) for his extreme views.”

Please explain to me how any Jew can overlook what is being expressed by the Republicans under the cloak of being 100% for Israel...? One statement totally cancels the other out by far. Is the Republican party’s association with Pegler just swept under the carpet??? No reasonable person, let alone a fellow Jew, can ignor this. I’m speechless.
