Palin, other elected officials disinvited from Iran rally

Here’s the report from Ben Harris:

NEW YORK (JTA) – Sarah Palin is being disinvited from the Jewish-sponsored Iran rally, sources told JTA.

The move follows two days of controversy for organizers of Monday’s rally to protest Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at the United Nations.

The controversy erupted after JTA reported that Palin, the Republican vice-presidential nominee, had accepted an invitation from the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations to speak at the event. The news of Palin’s participation prompted Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.), who had pledged several weeks earlier to speak at the rally, to announce she was withdrawing from the event.

Spokespeople for both Palin and Clinton proceeded to trade barbs over who was responsible for tainting the rally with politics.

A Clinton spokesperson said the senator withdrew because the rally had become “a partisan political event.”

Palin spokeswoman Tracy Schmitt took a shot at Clinton, saying the Republican nominee “believes that the danger of a nuclear Iran is greater than party or politics.”

The National Jewish Democratic Council defended Clinton’s decision not to attend and called for Palin to be disinvited so as to preserve the nonpartisan nature of the effort to halt Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

On Thursday, the Conference of Presidents held a conference call for rally organizers in which the decision was made to limit participation in the rally to unelected officials, participants on the call told JTA.

Shortly afterward, organizers put out a statement saying, “In order to keep the focus on Iranian threats and to ensure that this critical message not be obscured, the organizers of the rally have decided not to have any American political personalities appear.”

The statement said Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel and Israeli Knesset Speaker Dalia Itzik would address the demonstration.

The controversy has sparked concern that the issue of stopping Iran has been politicized, undermining efforts to cast opposition to Ahmadinejad’s belligerence and nuclear ambitions as a broad bipartisan issue in the United States. Jewish organizers have labored to present the Iranian regime as a threat not only to Israel but to the United States and the world.

In an effort to avoid the taint of imbalance and partisanship, the Presidents Conference issued a late invitation to the Obama campaign Wednesday morning. The Obama camp agreed to send Rep. Robert Wexler (D-Fla.), one of the Democratic nominee’s top Jewish backers.

Malcolm Hoenlein, the executive vice chairman of the Presidents Conference, told JTA earlier this week that the invitation to speak at the rally was extended to Clinton several weeks ago. He also told The New York Jewish Week that once Clinton accepted, organizers did not want to supersede her by bringing in someone from the Obama campaign.

Fred Zeidman, a leading Jewish backer of Republican presidential nominee John McCain, told JTA he was approached about helping secure a speaker around the time of the Republican National Convention at the beginning of September in Minnesota. Zeidman said he forwarded the request to the campaign last week with a recommendation that it cooperate.

“I remember saying to our guys, Hillary Clinton is representing the other side,” Zeidman said. “We’ve got to really take this seriously.”

In a statement this week, the McCain campaign noted its participation in the rally and derided Obama’s stated willingness to negotiate with the man being protested.

“Instead of pressuring Senator Clinton to withdraw and pressuring the event’s organizers to disinvite Governor Palin, we hope Senator Obama will consider lending his own voice to this cause,” McCain-Palin spokesman Michael Goldfarb said in a statement published on a Washington Post’s campaign blog, The Trail. “And if [the] Senator subsequently wishes to clarify any remarks that might be misconstrued, he will have the opportunity to meet with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad without preconditions after he speaks at the U.N. the following day.”

Clinton advisers said the senator dropped out of her own accord, not due to any pressure from the Obama campaign, according to the Washington Post.

“This is another dishonorable lie from John McCain,” said Obama spokesperson Tommy Vietor. “The Obama campaign had planned to send a surrogate, Rep. Robert Wexler, to the rally. The truth is, John McCain had a real opportunity to stand up for Israel’s security this week, but he refused to stand up to his allies in Congress who blocked Barack Obama’s bipartisan divestment bill that would have increased pressure on Iran.”

The rally “is not and will not be a partisan event,” Hoenlein told The Jewish Week before his group decided to cancel the invitation to Palin. “The organizers reached out to a wide spectrum of people. Hillary accepted early in August. We also asked numerous Republicans. Some we approached couldn’t make it, and since Governor Palin was coming to the United Nations to meet world leaders, her staff agreed to have her speak.”

Ira Forman, the National Jewish Democratic Council’s executive director, said it is the McCain campaign that was guilty of politicizing the rally with its partisan statements.

Along with other Jews involved in organizing the event, Forman also laid blame with the Presidents Conference, saying it bungled matters either by inviting Palin at all or by failing to notify the Clinton camp promptly that it had secured Palin’s participation. Forman praised the decision Thursday to cancel Palin’s appearance.

“It was a wise decision to make,” he said. “It depoliticizes an event that fundamentally needs support from everybody and shouldn’t be part of the political circus this year.”

Jewish Republicans agreed that the organizers blundered – but said the mistake was withdrawing the invitation to Palin.

“This is one of the biggest black marks on our community that I can remember in more than 20 years of working in the Jewish community,” Matt Brooks, the executive director of the Republican Jewish Coalition, told JTA.

“I think it is absolutely outrageous that we allow people with a partisan political agenda to hijack an event that is designed to send a message to Iran and the rest of the world of the U.S.’s commitment to ensure that Iran does not develop nuclear weapons. The fact that we can’t put partisan differences aside to come together on something like this, it’s sad and it’s disappointing.”

As the campaigns sparred over who was guilty of placing partisanship above principle, some Jewish leaders worried that an event intended to display unity in the face of the Iranian threat was crumbling.

“I do think that’s unfortunate,” said Rabbi Eric Yoffie, the president of the Union for Reform Judaism. “The point here obviously is to show broad bipartisan support for the need to stop a nuclear Iran. We don’t want the message to be diverted by internal political considerations.”

“It doesn’t make sense to me as an American Jewish policy matter, and as an American matter, to let one party or the other off the hook over what is going to be, objectively in our view, the most serious foreign policy issue of the next administration,” said David Twersky, a senior advisor on policy, international affairs and communications at the American Jewish Congress. “It’s not a good policy for the Jews.”

Shame on the Organization for Jewish Presidents . What shmucks. They sure do’t speak for millions of us Jews

Let it be known that they shamed the entire Jewish community by disinviting Gov Sarah Palin from the UN demonstration. The same idiots will be looking to win her good graces when she is the vice President of the United States and will need reams of paper to wipe the egg of their faces

Marion, there is not a chance in the world that you will develope any insight into what Sen Obama is about, so I am really directing this to the people who take the time to react to one of more stupid reactions of the self appointed Jewish leadership.

You choose to to make the discurtesy to Gov. Palin an opportunity to try and discredit her qualifications as a vice presidential candidate. This is not about her credentials..it is about common curtesy and decency in that when one extends an invitation to another, especially a public invitation, it is unconsionable to publicly withdraw it.

So you want to talk about Obama’s qualifications to be PRESIDENT? Fine, letsd look at what he’s accomplished in his life.

On the positive side, he got away from the drug life and got a first class education. Affirmative action may or may not have helped him because he has a first class mind anf there is no question as to his superior intelligence. Having said that, how is it possible that he sat in a church for better than ten years and never had a clue as to the bigoted, racist anti- American views of his pastor.

As to his ethics, he got elected to to the Ill. Legislkature by using every trick in the book to disqualify every one of his opponents, legal but shabby.

Couldn’t or wouldn’t make a decision or put himself on record in the Ill. legislature and when he did he voted to sanction murder by neglect of a viable post abortion child. (Now, I wouldn’t want to mislead you. I am not anti- abortion. I believe that an abortion may be permissible before tha fetus is viable--can survive outside the womb- per the Common Law, but the abortion of a viable fetus is murder and a late term abortion by piercing the skull of an emerging baby is deplorable).

Getting back to Obama, in his short span as a Senator he accomplished writing to self serving books and running for president. Oh, sure he co-sponsored a bunch of Bills which required taking the time to sign his name.

He has as much experience as my Aunt Tilly. He’s a good actor and a smooth operator and his presidency, if somehow he gets elected will be a disaster for the country. If experience counts, Palin beats him in spades.

Unfortunately, the democrats have selected a candidate thats all show and no substance.

CONTENT OF Governor SARAH PALIN’s speech that isn’t, but wold have been for today’s CoP rally.

The speech Governor Sarah Palin would have given at today’s CoP rally, had she not been so rudely dis-invited (source link citation follows Gov Palin’s speech transcript):

=======================

I am honored to be with you and with leaders from across this great country — leaders from different faiths and political parties united in a single voice of outrage.

Tomorrow, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will come to New York — to the heart of what he calls the Great Satan — and speak freely in this, a country whose demise he has called for.

Ahmadinejad may choose his words carefully, but underneath all of the rhetoric is an agenda that threatens all who seek a safer and freer world. We gather here today to

highlight the Iranian dictator’s intentions and to call for action to thwart him.

He must be stopped.

The world must awake to the threat this man poses to all of us. Ahmadinejad denies that the Holocaust ever took place. He dreams of being an agent in a “Final Solution” — the elimination of the Jewish people. He has called Israel a “stinking corpse” that is “on its way to annihilation.” Such talk cannot be dismissed as the

ravings of a madman — not when Iran just this summer tested long-range Shahab-3

missiles capable of striking Tel Aviv, not when the Iranian nuclear program is nearing completion, and not when Iran sponsors terrorists that threaten and kill

innocent people around the world.

The Iranian government wants nuclear weapons. The International Atomic Energy Agency reports that Iran is running at least 3,800 centrifuges and that its uranium enrichment capacity is rapidly improving. According to news reports, U.S.

intelligence agencies believe the Iranians may have enough nuclear material to produce a bomb within a year.

The world has condemned these activities. The United Nations Security Council has demanded that Iran suspend its illegal nuclear enrichment activities. It has levied

three rounds of sanctions. How has Ahmadinejad responded? With the declaration that the “Iranian nation would not retreat one iota” from its nuclear program.

So, what should we do about this growing threat? First, we must succeed in Iraq. If we fail there, it will jeopardize the democracy the Iraqis have worked so hard to build, and empower the extremists in neighboring Iran. Iran has armed and trained

terrorists who have killed our soldiers in Iraq, and it is Iran that would benefit from an American defeat in Iraq.

If we retreat without leaving a stable Iraq, Iran’s nuclear ambitions will be bolstered. If Iran acquires nuclear weapons — they could share them tomorrow with the terrorists they finance, arm, and train today. Iranian nuclear weapons would set off a dangerous regional nuclear arms race that would make all of us less safe.

But Iran is not only a regional threat; it threatens the entire world. It is the no. 1 state sponsor of terrorism. It sponsors the world’s most vicious terrorist groups, Hamas and Hezbollah. Together, Iran and its terrorists are responsible for the

deaths of Americans in Lebanon in the 1980s, in Saudi Arabia in the 1990s, and in Iraq today. They have murdered Iraqis, Lebanese, Palestinians, and other Muslims who

have resisted Iran’s desire to dominate the region. They have persecuted countless

people simply because they are Jewish.

Iran is responsible for attacks not only on Israelis, but on Jews living as far away as Argentina. Anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial are part of Iran’s official

ideology and murder is part of its official policy. Not even Iranian citizens are safe from their government’s threat to those who want to live, work, and worship in peace. Politically-motivated abductions, torture, death by stoning, flogging, and amputations are just some of its state-sanctioned punishments.

It is said that the measure of a country is the treatment of its most vulnerable citizens. By that standard, the Iranian government is both oppressive and barbaric.

Under Ahmadinejad’s rule, Iranian women are some of the most vulnerable citizens. If an Iranian woman shows too much hair in public, she risks being beaten or killed.

If she walks down a public street in clothing that violates the state dress code, she could be arrested.

But in the face of this harsh regime, the Iranian women have shown courage. Despite threats to their lives and their families, Iranian women have sought better treatment through the “One Million Signatures Campaign Demanding Changes to

Discriminatory Laws.” The authorities have reacted with predictable barbarism. Last year, women’s rights activist Delaram Ali was sentenced to 20 lashes and 10 months

in prison for committing the crime of “propaganda against the system.” After

international protests, the judiciary reduced her sentence to “only” 10 lashes and 36 months in prison and then temporarily suspended her sentence. She still faces the threat of imprisonment.

Earlier this year, Senator Clinton said that “Iran is seeking nuclear weapons, and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps is in the forefront of that” effort. Senator

Clinton argued that part of our response must include stronger sanctions, including the designation of the IRGC as a terrorist organization. John McCain and I could not agree more.

Senator Clinton understands the nature of this threat and what we must do to confront it. This is an issue that should unite all Americans. Iran should not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons. Period. And in a single voice, we must be loud enough for the whole world to hear:

Stop Iran!

Only by working together, across national, religious, and political differences, can we alter this regime’s dangerous behavior. Iran has many vulnerabilities, including

a regime weakened by sanctions and a population eager to embrace opportunities with the West. We must increase economic pressure to change Iran’s behavior.

Tomorrow, Ahmadinejad will come to New York. On our soil, he will exercise the right of freedom of speech — a right he denies his own people. He will share his hateful agenda with the world. Our task is to focus the world on what can be done to stop him.

We must rally the world to press for truly tough sanctions at the U.N. or with our allies if Iran’s allies continue to block action in the U.N. We must start with restrictions on Iran’s refined petroleum imports.

We must reduce our dependency on foreign oil to weaken Iran’s economic influence.

We must target the regime’s assets abroad; bank accounts, investments, and trading

partners.

President Ahmadinejad should be held accountable for inciting genocide, a crime under international law.

We must sanction Iran’s Central Bank and the Revolutionary Guard Corps — which no one should doubt is a terrorist organization.

Together, we can stop Iran’s nuclear program.

Senator McCain has made a solemn commitment that I strongly endorse:

Never again will we risk another Holocaust. And this is not a wish, a request, or a plea to

Israel’s enemies. This is a promise that the United States and Israel will honor, against any enemy who cares to test us.

It is John McCain’s promise and it is my

promise.

Thank you.

terrorists who have killed our soldiers in Iraq, and it is Iran that would benefit from an American defeat in Iraq.

It is John McCain’s promise and it is my
promise.

Thank you.

Stephanie,

I think there is a point I should clarify. When I commented here to you earlier, I included the quote:

“Hate fears above all to be delivered of itself.”

I was NOT directing that quote at YOU. I was referring to those who hate Israel, her people and Jews everywhere.

It occurred to me in retrospect I may not have made that point clear in the initial post. If so, please accept my apology for any misunderstanding due to poor wording.

Sorry, Stephanie, the words of the madman President of Iran, by which he promises regularly to annihilate Israel ring far too loudly in my ears to hear from those who think we are in a Billy Jack movie and that peace can be made with those who seek only Israel’s utter and complete destruction.

Question: How many times must the madman of Tehran, backed by his gaggle of murderous Mullahs, promise Israel’s destruction before he is taken seriously?

You cannot reason with a madman who believes Israel has no right to exist on this planet. You cannot reason with a people who teach their children from the cradle that Jews are apes and monkeys. Do you need the links for that?

Surely you are not unaware of what is being taught?

Moreover, upon being dis-invited, over the weekend, Gov Palin has released the speech she had prepared before being publicly humiliated by the so-called leaders of Jewish Americans.

These Organizers/Leaders of American Jews sound as concerned about the well-being of Jews as those Jewish American organizations were 65 years ago.

I am a student of history. It was not just the world, America pre-Pearl Harbor included, who sat idly by.

I’ll post the copy/resource link for the Palin speech that will not be today momentarily.

G-d have mercy.

Roy, I should not have posted in the heels of my anger in my initial comments here. I cannot stop my support of Israel and her people - we will simply redirect our resources directly to those whom we trust inside Israel and thus bypass these American Jewish organizations.

Please pardon my opening anger. It was inappropriate ... and it is not how I really believe.

Kathy C, please, I implore you, don’t stop supporting Israel and her people. Do as we have decided over the weekend to do. I was very angry too, initially, last week when all of this emerged publicly.

We will continue our support, only we will bypass the American Jewish organizations and do so directly to worthy organizations within Israel.

We have contacts from our many volunteer trips there with both host families and Kibutz’ing it ... BUT it will only take you a small amount of time spent researching worthy Israeli organizations to support.

Again, in closing, I implore you to please consider doing that in lieu of pulling your support completely from Israel and her people - it is still greatly needed!

Thank you for your time.

I notice you don’t have the courage to provide your last name.

I also noticed you didn’t mention Obama’s 20 year relationship with avowed anti-Semite Rev. Wright? Is that a Fox news lie too?

The bottom line with all you Iran-obsessed Palin-lovers is that you don’t (or maybe can’t?) read and understand facts. There is a breathtaking amount of evidence from very credible sources about Palin’s unreadiness to lead. And I do not find a flag to be evidence of anything. Even if the woman “likes” or “admires” Israel, what does that mean for us as Jews? First of all, if the only thing you vote on as a US citizen is Israel I feel sorry for you because you’re still living in 1959. Welcome to the millenium, folks. Second, if you have any interest in actual facts from the real world, read what Obama’s Israel policies really are - and have been since day one. His alleged friendship of Farrakhan is a complete lie, but again, you must check actual facts and not get your news only out of the Fox/White House newsfeed. Do you realize that getting your news there is akin to getting it out of Pravda circa 1970? Probably not. Palin may in fact not be a bad person—I have never said she was. I just repeat, she is not ready to lead, not by a long shot. She may think Israel is cool and like Jews (probably owing to her church’s obsession with End Times, but who knows) but that doesn’t mean she’s a worthy VEEP choice. Oh, and for the person who doesn’t understand why intentionally writing Obama’s full name is racist, are you that dumb? Really? You don’t understand nuance? You don’t understand how political propaganda works? I honestly feel sorry for you, but I am not going to explain it. Go ask someone that you know. And then maybe take a moment to look inside of yourself and face the fact that you probably have no Black friends and that you probably cross the street when they are walking next to you. You probably live in a suburb that is all white, (and probably mostly Jewish). In fact, I bet you’d be happiest in a shtetl. If you are so obsessed with Israel and you think American Jews should care about it first, foremost, and only—why do you live here? Go and serve in the army and pay taxes there.

and even more important, the exposure to Franl and his camera was not “vetted” by a committee of advisors. Franl should make his footage available to the public...it would serve the best interests of the USA as well as the world.

As a matter of interest, there were more than a few German Jews in 1929 and 1930 who really believed that Hitler was a good choice for Germanuy.

And as for the hysterical criticism of Gov.Palin, the shrill negativism directed at her Christian faith is as biased, “racial” and deplorable as would be use of the word , first letter “n”, applied to Senator Obama.

May I remind my Jewish friends, Bush and Republicans are not the issue of the now sadly diminished Rally...Iran is the issue and the problem, and it appears that the Democrats have succeeded in bringing politics into the picture and “f...ing it up”.

Why, all of a sudden, calling Sen. Obama by his full name is racist?! Isn’t his name Barak Hussein Obama?! And why in the world would you equate this to hatred? Marion G: I found your post dumb and lacking any sense.

People. My g-d! I can’t believe the rubbish I’m hearing from you, you who are supposed to be educated! Didn’t your parents insist that you graduate at least college? It seems not. You have bought the Republican talking points lock, stock and barrel and forgotten what it means to be a scholarly, investigative, thoughtful Jew. Someone mentioned that we’re people of the book, but so many people writing here are just plain stupid, and I find it rather embarrassing. Palin may be a “quick-study”, but she believes in creationism—isn’t that enough said for you? Or do you too shun the last three-hundred years of science and think the enlightenment was a mistake? So she had an Israeli flag in her office—so what? We should throw away our liberties and invite a small-town Mayor into the highest office in our land? Because she’s “folksy?” When did my fellow Jews become so small-minded and one-note? Even I, someone who loves Israel deeply (I have family there) know that it is not the only issue. And honestly, if you look at the facts it’s so so so so clear that bombing Iran is the worst possible option for Israel and the US. But you have to read, analyze, and understand actual facts to get that, not just watch Fox and accept it as the gospel truth. I am ashamed of the lot of you. (Except a few who spoke out against the nonsense.)

And those of you dumb and transparent enough to keep writing “Barack Hussein Obama”—aren’t you even ashamed of your open racism just a little bit? Do you know how horribly it damages our Jewish reputation when the world sees us behave this way? Even if you feel hatred for Black people in your hearts, must you slander the rest of our community and take us down with you by exposing your hatred? Keep it to yourself. I’m not racist, but you know that the anti-semites of the world will accuse us as a group. I will do everything in my power to separate myself from such thinly veiled fear of people of color. You are truly disgusting, and incredibly stupid.

It is unjust to categorize all Christians in a “cookier cutter” manner. As with any church or religion, folks go along their journey in faith at various speeds and levels of knowledge, some are babes in the faith while others are pillars in the faith. Not everyone is cut out of the same cloth, we’re all unique, with different life experiences that make us what we are. There are folks in every faith who voice their own opinions about things, not always using wisdom from G-d especially when it comes to losing a loved one. I am sorry you lost your daughter. I have no doubt you miss her very much. I believe G-d looks at the heart of a person, and meets them there. I believe there are going to be many surprises when we all reach the end of our journeys. May G-d bless you and give you peace in all things.

Jeff ~ I’ve heard Palin speak on this subject too and you are so wrong. Yes, she believes that Jesus is her Lord and Savior, no, she does not believe that the only Salvation for Jewish people is to convert. What words EXACTLY did you hear her say? Please site specific articles, interviews, websites, not vague blogs where there is so much fabrication.

I will try to find the articles I’ve read and the interviews I’ve watched when she mentioned this very subject if you’d like.

Governor Palin was INVITED to speak at the rally and then she was UNinvited! Hillary Clinton CHOSE NOT TO COME because you invited someone she didn’t care to share the spotlight with!! How dare anyone blame this on the Republicans! (I am, by the way, a registered Independent and I hate both parties equally!)

Why would you dis-invite someone who (from what I’ve read) is a staunch supporter of Israel? I see Governor Palin even has the Israeli flag hanging in her office! And yet, you give in to the political party whose candidate thinks it is a good idea to negotiate with the man who wants to blow Israel off the face of the earth!! Smart move! Way to go!

I know nothing of the Jewish people except what I was taught in school about the Holocaust, and what I hear in the news, and also just recently what I’ve heard Governor Palin say in interviews and all those things combined of course aroused sympathy in me for their cause. But two incidents these past few weeks have arose that leave me mind-boggled by the Jewish community. One was the uninviting of Governor Palin and the other is the so-called comedy routine of Sandra Bernhard performed at the Washington DC Jewish Community Center where Bernhard warns Governor Palin not to come to NYC or she will be gang-raped by some of Bernhard’s big black brothers. This ‘comedy’ is endorsed by the Washington DC Jewish Community Center and spoken of as edgy and complicated, and they say they are ‘very happy’ with this show, ‘very happy’ with Sandra Bernhard, and I sit here shaking my head! Why would a people that are so hated endorse hateful remarks? Why would a people that are so hated uninvite someone who is more than willing to support you? What’s wrong with this world?

Like has been stated here many times, but cannot be sufficiently restated, Jews in North America and Europe have become their own worst enemy.

Fighting last century’s battles, supporting the liberal fascism that strengthens Israel’s and jews’ most threatening enemies (the oil/islamism nexus).

Jews here have become so soft, so complacent, so blind to the gathering storm....

This is a great article about the Israeli filmaker and war hero who spent many hours with Governor Palin a few months ago.

Shooting Sarah Palin

By David Suissa?

“I was visiting with a friend and Israeli war hero the other day, a guy with great stories named Elan Frank, and all we could talk about was Sarah Palin.

Let me explain. Frank was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1982 after he rescued 25 Israeli soldiers caught in a nighttime terrorist ambush deep inside Lebanon. The conditions were so risky that Frank’s co-pilot suggested they abort the mission. Frank ignored the advice, and under intense enemy fire, he made a daredevil 360 degree move to speed up the helicopter’s landing and rescue the troops.

That was 26 years ago. Now Frank is a busy filmmaker.

Earlier this year, he called the office of the governor of Alaska to ask permission to shoot Sarah Palin for his new film, a documentary about powerful women of the world. Because he had spent a lot of time in Alaska, he’d heard about the feisty Palin and thought she’d be a natural.

Well, guess what? She said yes.

So there he was in Alaska a few weeks later, with his camera practically glued for several days to the eight-months-pregnant governor as she went about her daily business.

As fate would have it, soon thereafter Palin became the most talked-about woman on the planet, and Frank became the proprietor of film footage everyone wanted to see.

While I sat in his office last week, he took several calls from the press, including one from a producer at Fox television, who’s flying him to New York this week to appear on Fox News’ “On The Record With Greta Van Susteren.”

Frank hasn’t yet decided what to do with all the footage. Eventually, he hopes to make it part of his “Great Women” series and air it on a major television network.

I couldn’t wait that long, so he gave me a sneak preview of several hours of raw footage, including lots of private, off-the-cuff moments.

Here’s my conclusion after observing Palin in action: If you’re rooting for Obama-Biden this November, there’s reason to be nervous.

I don’t say this because I discovered something new and extraordinary about Palin. Rather, it’s that everything I saw reinforced the attributes that make her a winner.

For starters, she’s a likeable adrenalin junkie who doesn’t shy from public exposure. Palin gave Frank unusual access, so we got to see, on a typical day: Palin discussing legislative strategy with her chief of staff; reviewing the bidding process for the $40 billion Alaskan gas pipeline; making jokes about having to dust her office; schmoozing with lawmakers; asking pointed questions of her aides; inviting Oprah, on camera, to visit Alaska; speaking emotionally about fighting for oppressed women around the world; rushing under a snowfall to greet her 7-year-old daughter at a school bus stop; flirting with her husband and calling him “the boss”; playing the flute by a window; and, while talking to an aide on the phone in her kitchen and making dinner for her daughter, reminding the daughter not to stuff herself on potato chips.

Through it all, Palin was upbeat and cheerful—but you can sense an underlying edge. Frank’s camera captured some of that edge by showing the forceful movement of her hands when she felt strongly about something, or the occasional subtle glare when something didn’t please her.

There’s little doubt about Palin’s competitive streak; she couldn’t have succeeded in the rough world of Alaskan politics without one. Yet, unlike other driven politicians like Hillary Clinton, whose steely demeanor and exaggerated enthusiasm can turn off or intimidate people, Palin uses her folksy charm to disarm people. It’s the proverbial fist in the velvet glove.

Beyond that, there’s one sobering thought for sophisticated liberals who are aghast at the possibility that this caribou-hunting evangelical supermom will snatch defeat from their jaws of victory.

She’s a quick study.

Unlike a well-known current resident of the White House, she’s not intellectually lazy or impatient with details. What I saw was a probing, engaged woman who’s always on—and is anything but a naďve, small-town hick.

I wouldn’t be surprised if she looks more and more savvy as the campaign heads to the finish line. Unlike her critics who see her as a shooting star who will flame out, I see an ambitious newcomer to the big time who’s got enough street smarts to quickly improve herself. (The question, of course, will be how quickly she can catch up and make up for her lack of national experience.)

Frank saw all of those things and more when he hung out with Palin in Alaska. Frank himself is an independent who’s staunchly pro-Israel, and whose primary concern as a voter is the global threat of nuclear-based terrorism.

He’s not overly worried about Palin’s lack of experience on the world stage. He’s seen too many “experienced” and worldly politicians fall flat on their faces, and he sees in Palin a “natural-born leader” with good intuition who knows how to ask the right questions.

He thinks Palin is the opposite of what they call in Israel a “freyer” (a sucker or a fool), meaning that she’ll see right through the deceptive tactics of sneaky lizards like Ahmadinejad of Iran or Assad of Syria, who he believes would outmatch a well-intentioned and articulate diplomat like Barack Obama.

So yes, Frank seems to have fallen under her spell. But Frank is no freyer himself. This is a war hero who spent seven years in the Israeli army fighting a wily foe. He knows all about deception. He doesn’t trust easily. He can tell real from fake and tough from soft.

If Sarah Palin is anything, he says, she’s real and tough.

And in a dangerous world, Frank sees the appeal of a lioness who’s real and tough. Especially a lioness who learns quickly, loves her country and hates to lose.

Your dis-invitation of Governor Sarah Palin is an ad hoc endorsement of Barak Hussein Obama. Shame on you. Your organization has turned into a shill for the Democratic Party. You did this only because Hillary had a hissy fit that Palin was invited. Governor Palin respresented the best way for you to draw attention to the dastardly brazen Ahmedinajad. I am so ashamed to be associated as a Jew under your unbrella of “leadership”. I have been generous with giving to Jewish organizations which do not represent our interests any more. NOT one cent more to any organization under your leadership! Palin had graciously accepted to speak out in support of Israel and against the new Hitler. Your actions are absolutely shameful. I am totally disgusted with Jews working against the interests of Jews. This reminds me of Jabotinsky being pelted with rocks in Europe when he warned Jews of threats to their lives. Shame on you! Shame!
So for some reason which I never understood, the vast mayority of Jewish people is supporting the democratic party - although their leaders have a long history of antiisraelian policy:

-Biden doesn´t think Iran is a real threat and if it is it´s George W. Bushs fault - he is considered Iran´s favourite senator in U.S. Senate

-Barack Hussein Obama with all his propalestinian buddies from Woods Foundation and AAAN (Arab American Action Network ) like Rashid Khalidi ( former spokesman of Arafat )

- and all the other antiisraelian crowd with Jimmy Carter, Michael Moore, George Soros and their ilk.

Reading the posts of Gladys Kravitz ( “Israel will take care of them” ), Andrea ( “idiot Condi “ ), EM ( “ Palin´s participation offends people “ ) and Stefanie Weiss ( “and the military option is very, very bad” )now I understand - you deserve “leaders” like Obama and Biden.

But take it with all consequences - don´t complain later.

I, a proud Jew, acted on my conscience in writing to the organizers of the rally to convey my disagreement with their invite of Sarah Palin. Last time I checked it was my right as an American and as a Jew to register my disagreement with fellow Americans and Jews.

Here is part of what I wrote, which conveys my reasoning, for which I do not apologize:

Dear Conference of Presidents and Associated Organizations,

I write to express my indignation at the news of your invitation to Sarah Palin to participate in your upcoming rally against Iranian aggression. You do a significant disservice to our community and our cause by involving Sarah Palin in this (or any other) rally. ... It is abundantly clear what Sarah Palin stands to gain from participation in this event—but should we be used in this way, for partisan gain, on such a serious issue?

Among other objections, everything Palin knows about Israel (everything that does not have to do with the urgent need to convert Jews) she learned in the last two weeks. Her election to national office would be a disaster for Israel. The situation with Iran and the Middle East in general is too delicate to be put in the hands of the temperamental John McCain and his sidekick… She is John McCain’s shameless pander to the Christian right and thinks we are all going to hell. Perhaps you can explain how exactly this qualifies her to speak on such a serious issue as Middle East policy?

I admire Hillary Clinton, a true friend of the Jewish community, for refusing to be a part of this farce. You would do well to return this event to a non-partisan footing, so that the proper message regarding Iran is sent.

Sincerely,

...

If exercising my right to object to Palin’s participation offends people, I think they are very much missing the point of what the freedom of expression means. If the commenters here have a problem with Obama, so be it, but Sarah Palin is unworthy of their agitation on her behalf.

Can you please explain to me why Sarah Palin would have an Israeli flag up in her office if she is such a Jew-hater? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDSlOU8HPRY Did she see into the future and put the flag up so as to show her fake support for Israel when she was running for VP? So...let me get this straight. You hate Sarah Palin for many reasons, but one of them being she sat near an anti-Semite? Yet you dismiss Obama after sitting in that Jew and American hater’s church for 20 years? You really believe that he NEVER heard anything racist? And then you also must not have a problem with Obama being willing to sit down with Ahmadinajed without pre-conditions? Are you aware that this is the guy who wants your race wiped off the map? So I am sure that Obama will be able to talk him out of his lifelong hate for Israel, and then they and all the Jews can sit around the campfire and sing Kum-Ba-Yah together? Is your stomach hurting from all the Kool-aid you’ve obviously been drinking?

Your views are laughable. Have you also been living under a rock and missed the whole Jeremiah Wright debacle? This is a man who not only hates Jews, also hates America...."God damn America,” I believe, was the quote. Wright is also a man who is good friends with Farakhan (went to Libya with him). You think that a guy that can sit in the pew for 20 years with a pastor like that hasn’t taken on some of his views? You are a kool-aid drinker. Why don’t you challenge your intellectual honesty and go check out the facts on this....I dare you. I am totally baffled at how Jewish people are turning a blind eye to the racism displayed in Obama’s church.

Do you live under a rock? If you were paying attention you would have heard that Mrs. Palin only wore a Buchanen button on one occasion. When PB was campaigning several years ago in her little town that she was mayor of at the time. She wore it as a thank you for going so far out of his way to campaign in Wasilla, Alaska. She has NEVER been a Buchanen supporter. She was supporting Forbes in that election. You need to get a clue and quit believing every rumor you hear. But you probably don’t even care if it’s rumor or not, do you? You will believe anything the vitreol spewing left throws out there. You just want a reason to hate her.

I am popping back here for just a moment to suggest that all of you who live in terror of Iran watch the CNN special with former secretaries of state from both Republican and Democratic administrations.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/09/16/secretaries.state.forum/index.html

From Henry Kissinger to James Baker to Madeline Albright, every single one of them wants the next president to engage with Iran diplomatically. And they all think that the military option is a very, very bad idea. And most agreed with my upthread assessment of Ahmadinejad and how “dangerous” he is. You may think Palin is smarter than these five former secretaries of state who have probably a hundred years of experience between them, but rather than obsessing over trivialities, get the facts. We live in a dangerous world, and Iran is not the only danger.

Guess what, people? This election isn’t exclusively about Iran. it seems that America’s Jews, who have long been known to look at the big picture, should know this. And as for all you anti-Obama ringers out there in blogland, why don’t we have a real debate about what’s really critical here (and let me give you a hint: it’s not a friggin’ rally): the economy, a nearly $1 billion bailout (the details of which we’re not going to be privvy to); two wars for which we have no money to pay for them in places where we don’t belong; spiraling healthcare costs; I could go on. But what we really need to do here is FOCUS. If you think poking Iran in the eye is a good idea, maybe you really do support Palin/McCain (ooops, I mean, McCain/Palin). It’s about as good an idea as taunting Russia these days, which that idiot Condi Rice did the other day in a speech by saying that Russia is making itself irrelevant. So why don’t we focus on what’s important here? We have an election to win, and really, no kidding, it’s not all about us, or Iran. And by the way, stop attacking people here like Stefanie. That’s childish and off-topic.

When will the American Jewish community open their eyes and see what the truth is really about?

Iran is a signatory to the Non proliferation act, Israel refuses to sign and has most likely in excess of 200 nuclear weapons.

Mossad is getting caught all over the world stealing passports, creating false flag events, running weapons and variety of assassinations.

Iran has 10 trillion in energy resources, this is what the neocons are after.

I’ll tell you as a FORMER Jew, the actions of Israel and the leftist as well as the Bolshevik Likudnik Jewish community has turned my stomach more times than a wheel on a train.

I’m a Christian former Armor officer with Israeli forces friends.

You folks are idiots, I’m sorry to say.

1. You hold a rally every year in solidarity and in oposition to the regime in Tehran. You seek broad based support from the US public and god media coverage. You blew this one.

2. Invitations went out. The time to be judgemental about who was to be invited was before they were invited. After the fact, you just want RSVP Yes.

3. Hillary and Obama screwed this up, your leaders screwed this up, but you should have moved on with Palin there along with what? 20 other NYC Democratic politicans on stage? All running for election? Why was that ifferent than Palin? Give me a break. It as a protest rally, not a partisan event. If Palin hadn’t been there, you were going to have a zillion democratic luminaries on stage. that didnt make it partisan, they were concerned about the issue (or at least faking it). Palin cared enough to come. Obama, Biden, Clinton didn’t care enough. Then they turned around and threatened you with the IRS. Talk about Gestapo tactics. This is before they take over. waht about afterward?

4. You want respect from the Democrats? Show some balls and start talking to the GOP again. Have you forgotten Obama’s AIPAC undivided Jerusalem 24 hour flip flop or Rev Wright? Obama is not your friend. He will say what he needs to to keep your vote. Until you Jews become more critical of broken Democratic promises on Israel you won’t get the honest support you deserve from both parties.

5. Obama wants to talk to Iran without preconditions, he sounds like Olmert. The only way to deal with bullies is to have a big stick and friends. Bush has made a bunch of bad decisions, but he has been a friend of Israel. More so than Kerry would have been. McCain and Palin are friends. All those demo foreign policy types want to sell you out. Remember Biden’s solution for Iraq? divide in three parts and run away? What if that were the Obama solution for an Israeli peace treaty.

6. Time to more on. try to rebuild your bridges to the GOP. Hold the Dems accountable for your support. Fight Iran and never give in.

oh, and replace those gutless leaders who screwed this up.

In the 70’s, led by the late William F. Buckley, the Republicans purged their organization of hate groups such as the John Birch Society. It was a process of marginalizing extremist and hate mongering groups. As Bill Levinson rightly points out, perhaps it is time for affiliated American Jewish groups to do the same with the NJDC. Buckley believed, and rightfully so, that the soul of the party as well as their future political viability was at stake. He was right. The proof of his work was the Reagan era. Who is brave enough in the Jewish community to take a similar stance?

The National “Jewish” Democratic Council is effectively an organizational Judenrat or Kapo. As an example, it used its nominally Jewish identity to whitewash MoveOn.org’s anti-Semitic hate speech. It has also posted anti-Christian hate images (in the Bubbie versus the GOP video). Responsible Jews must condemn NJDC as strongly as responsible Christians condemn nominally “Christian” hate groups like the KKK.

Rescinding Gov Palin’s invitation was the height of stupidity and craven obeisance to the Democrats, whose candidate for President has hung out with America and Jew haters and who certainly can’t be counted on when Israel is ever in peril. You so-called “Presidents” should disinvite yourselves and go get seichel transplants!

“Sources: Intense Pressure Led To Palin UN Snub

CBS 2 HD Has Learned Democrats Threatened To Attack Jewish Groups’ Tax Exempt Status Over VP Nominee Invite

Campaign ‘08 Complete Coverage

About The Candidates & Issues

Reporting

Marcia Kramer NEW YORK (CBS) ? Hillary Clinton won’t be speaking at Monday’s anti-Iran rally at the United Nations — and neither will Republican Sarah Palin or any other politicians for that matter.

The reason? A heated behind the scenes tug-of-war.

Sources tell CBS 2 HD that a decision to disinvite Palin from the high profile rally after Clinton pulled out in a huff came as the result of intense pressure from Democrats.

“This is insulting. This is embarrassing, especially to Gov. Palin, to me and I think it should be to every single New Yorker,” Assemblyman Dov Hikind, D-Brooklyn, told CBS 2 HD.

Sources say the axes were out for Palin as soon as Sen. Clinton pulled out because she did not want to attend the same event as the Republican vice presidential candidate.

“I have never seen such raw emotion — on both sides,” said someone close to the situation.

The groups sponsoring the rally against Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad speaking at the UN were reportedly told, “it could jeopardize their tax exempt status” if they had Palin and not Clinton or Democratic VP candidate Joe Biden on hand.

So all politicians were disinvited, most prominently, Palin.

“It’s an absolute shame that this has happened,” Hikind said. “To threaten organizations … to threaten the Conference of Presidents that if you don’t withdraw the invitation to Gov. Palin we’re going to look into your tax exempt status … that’s McCarthyism.”

Another Jewish group tried to step into the breach by inviting Palin to a different protest a day earlier.

“I’m absolutely appalled at the behavior of the Democrats,” said Bob Kunst of Defenders.net. “I’m a Democrat and for the first time in my life I’m going to vote Republican. I can’t take it anymore.”

As for Sen. Clinton, she brushed right past CBS 2 HD’s Lou Young when he tried to ask her about the issue on Thursday night.

Lou Young: “Were the organizers of Monday’s rally right to depoliticize it?”

Clinton walked past Young, said “Thank you all very much” and started hugging people.

Clinton’s people tell CBS 2 HD she intends to make some statement of support for the protestors. She is also expected to attack Ahmadinejad’s pro-nuke, anti-Israel stance.”

I being an outsider and not of Jewish faith have found this blog to be very interesting. The intelligence of all the participants have been very refreshing and entertaining.

But I am finding it very unusual the “hatred” direct at Sarah Palin by some. I would like someone to tell me what makes some one “qualified” on foreign policy issues???? Is it not someone that will fight for the beliefs and values of this nation we love? Someone that holds these convictions to the root of their soul? Someone that does not change them because of who they are around or who they are speaking too? Someone who is willing to say I am a “Conservative” and proud of it or someone that says I am a “Liberal” and proud of it?

So what makes Obama qualified?

So what makes John McCain qualified?

So what makes Sen. Biden qualified?

So what makes Sarah Palin qualified?

Will not all of these individuals be surrounded by foreign policy experts and legal experts for each country that they may have to deal with?

So at the end of the day I go with those that are proud of who they are and who they have associated with. Those who have a proven track record of being on the right side of history. Those that stand up for our country first and those that are true friends of the State of Israel.

Ahmadinejad must be laughing his head off at this one. Here we had a chance to stand up in unity to this pig, not just because he wants to exterminate Israel and Jews, but because he hates America and Americans as well. He wants to enslave the Middle East under his radical interpretation of Sharia.

You don’t have to be Jewish to oppose that. You don’t have to be Republican or Democrat or liberal or conservative. Everyone has a stake in this.

But apparently we learn that “everyone” is not welcome in the fight against fascism and violent extremism. Sarah Palin, for example, is not. And speaking of Vice Presidential candidates, where was Joe Biden?

Ahmadinejad laughs. I weep tears of anger. Liberals gloat at their own demise.

at Theater J ( “Theater J has emerged as one of the most distinctive, progressive and respected Jewish Theaters on the national and international scene. A programm of the Washingon DC Jewish Community Center “ )

These are the same Jewish Organizations disinviting Sarah Palin.

I am just listening Woody Allan on TV - “Obama must win - Sarah Palin is a cowgirl without any experience”

How utterly disappointing. I am not Jewish, yet I give money every year to Jewish organizations as a sign of respect for the sad history and the hopeful future of Jews and Israel. Here now we all have a common enemy and a show of solidarity is thoroughly undermined by pettiness.

I am seriously re-thinking my support of American Jewish organizations. While heartened to read the comments from rational members of the community, I will wait and see what happens with the leadership of this small, small group.

OK, Susan, fine, if you insist. All Christians are evil, Jew-haters who while appearing to support Israel and her people, both with their time and financial resources, secretly seek Israel and her people’s destruction. [sarcasm]

Albert Einstein, post WWI:

“Only the Church stood squarely in Hitler’s path...that which I once despised, I now unreservedly embrace....”

You are foolish in your suppositions. You paint all Christians with a broad brush dipped liberally in the paint of ignorance.

You had a bad experience, there are teachers who pervert the Scriptures and wrest them to befit the desires of their own evil hearts ... just as there are those who fervently exeget Scripture with a sound, systematic hermeneutic and who would be horrified to do otherwise.

Enjoy continuing to paint broadly with your brush dipped in foolish ignorance, do so with impunity if it serves your agenda.

By all means if you must, vote to entrust the future support of Israel and her people to a candidate endorsed from afar by the very terrorist states and terrorist leaders who seek to annihilate Israel.

So be it.

Shame, shame. What an embarrassment! This is the final straw. I’ve voted Democratic, sometimes straight ticket, for years. I now realize the schmuck was ME. Sarah Palin had an Israeli flag in her office long before she was picked for the VP nomination. Do you think Obama had one? You, know, He of the terrorist friends (not just “someone in the neighborhood”, as he tried to palm Ayers and Dohrn off). No, Farrakhan is HIS friend and not the friend of Jews. WAKE UP! We didn’t leave the Democrats, they LEFT US. Look around. This is the most visible one, but there are lots of clues that the Republicans care more about Israel than the Democrats.

Support this nonsense? No.

Palin at the event would have raised the profile of an event that has invited politicians in the past. Disinviting Palin was craven, if the GOP was going to send her, the Democrats would have send someone too rather than risk being excluded.

Instead Obama’s fundraiser Ptitzker is having a reception for the leader of Iran, who means to destroy Israel.

How in the world can anyone fault Palin on this?

“Biden´s Blink on Iran

.........But his record on the Islamic Republic of Iran - perhaps the chief national security threat facing the next president - suggests a persistent and dangerous judgment deficit. Biden´s unyielding pursuit of “engagement “ with Iran for more than a decade has made it easier for Tehran to pursue its nuclear program, while his partisan obsession with thwarting the Bush administriation has led him to oppose tough sanctions against hard-liners in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard “

(Michael Rubin, Tuesday, August 26, 2008 Washington Post)

Do you think that this man will participate a rallye against his iranian buddies?

Are you dreaming?

Black day indeed. With the very existence of Israel threatened daily with destruction, Jewish Democrats have decided to play partisan politics. I am one of those independent voters that have been sitting on the fence, undecided about who will get my vote this November. In fact, I have never voted Republican in a Presidential election in thirty years. I can now say that I will not vote for a man that has surrounded himself with more people that wish Israel harm than anyone else who has ever run for national office.

Shame on people like Mary who in her cynical comments spreads lies about a woman simply because she does not support abortion.

I am feeling similar to Ann - a longstanding supporter of Israel - and today confused about some of the concerns raised about my Christian faith.

Why Stefanie Weiss doesn´t reply to Natan´s very clear questions about Obamas relationship to antiisraelian , propalestinian people?

Obama was still together with Ayers after 11/9

- nothing to do with the age of 8 when Ayers was a terrorist.

Why the Main Stream Media is not much interested in probing Barack Obama´s record before he arrived in the U.S. Senate in 2004?There is no shortage of material or information which might be relevant to voters.

Remember Hillary Clinton:” I also believe that Senator Obama served on a board with Mr. Ayers for a period of time , the Woods Foundation, which was a paid directorship position. And, if I´m not mistaken, that relationship with Mr. Ayers on this board continued after 9/11 and after his reported comments, which were deeply hurtful to people in New York and, I would hope, to every American, because they were published on 9/11, and he said he was just sorry they hadn´t done more.

And what they did was set bombs. And in some instances , people died.

So it is - I think it is, again, an issue that people will be asking about”.

Do you believe Mrs. Clinton?

Palin should never have been invited. She is the political equivalent of Eva Braun,in my opinion.

Even if she weren’t, she’s unqualified to speak on foreign policy as she is completely ignorant on the subject and would need to hit up Bush’s speechwriter again to even sound like she has a clue.

SHe seems to lack ethics and even a child’s level of self-control, she’s uneducated and would be a poor choice to align with for any important cause because her support would automatically devalue that position, also my opinion.

You may say you and your AoG church love the Jewish people, but you sure wish they’d convert! Your love of the Jewish people stops when we say we will not convert. I am a convert to Judaism because I was disgusted with the Christian religion, their lies, and their misinterpretation of my Bible (Old Testament) to suit their needs. An Evangelical Christian once told my that my daughter, who died in a car accident, was going to hell because she did not believe in Jesus. And do not tell me that there are just a few who are like this. Every Christian I meet tells me that unless I believe in Jesus I am damned. I guess it is just hard for Christians to live up to the Jewish Jesus way of life. He certainly would be disgusted with the way you treat others in His name.

PS—there is nothing innocuous about those Hagee quotes. Unless you’re racist, sexist and/or homophobic. The hateful statements are clear. And the quotes I shared are just a brief assortment. He has been called out as a hatemonger multiple times by many moderate organizations, Jewish ones included. If my rabbi said anything like Hagee I’d never enter the shul again. Just because your friend Lieberman is still breaking bread with Hagee doesn’t mean he’s an okay guy.

Here are some fellow Jews who accuse him not just of the offenses listed above, but also of anti-semitism:

Shana Tovah to all. May you see the light of peace when you sit across from your beautiful families and consider the world we need to build together as one people.

I cannot believe any Jewish organization would invite Palin to anything. Her religion calls for anyone who does not believe in Jesus to be condemed to hell. She wants to teach creationism in the schools, she is a destroyer of nature (not referring to hunting), she wants to take a woman’s right to choose - even in rape and incest, she believes everything is God’s will - including the Iraq war, she and her husband feel they are above the law by not answering court summons, she does not believe man is responsible for global warming, etc. What is there about her that make Jews drool. Remember, once she wipes out the infidel Arabs, it is us next.

Really, this has to be my last post. I have spent way too much time being the only non right-winger posting here to continue. You guys have a whole team on this blog, so clearly this is not the right venue for me. Forgive me if I don’t have the energy to keep going. But know that my brothers and sisters are many and strong—they’re just not here on this blog.

That said, in response to “The Observer”. First of all, the vast majority of Jews are pro-choice. Obviously I know that the Vice President makes no such decisions regarding constitutional law. Duh. What you disingenuously left out is the fact that we all know John Mccain is a 72 year-old man who has had more than one bout with cancer. Palin could be in the Oval Office in no time, and that’s not a risk most thinking people are willing to take. WIth several aging Supreme Court justices soon to retire, the next President is going to be making appointments. Nothing Sarah Palin has said or done gives me any sense of security regarding the choices she would make. She is so far to the right, so zealous, so beyond the mainstream, that many people are certain she’d use the ultimate litmus test and fill the court with more people like Clarence Thomas, John Roberts, etc. Soon Roe v Wade would be reversed. It’s quite easy to see how it would end up that way. And please—don’t accuse me of fear-mongering when over and over people have listed their outrageous fears of what an Obama presidency would look like, that he’d give Iran a free ride. From reading some of the shorter posts with coded language, it seems that some here actually believe he’s a secret Muslim, and have been convinced by the email whisper campaign that targeted Jews. That’s truly sad.

But without having to do any mudslinging, I cannot risk having in the White House a woman who is against the assault weapons ban, who believes creationism should be taught in schools, who has NO foreign policy experience, who doesn’t believe in choice even IN CASES OF RAPE OR INCEST, who is against important forms of stem cell research, who only got a passport two years ago, who has never met a head of state, and who appears not to have any grasp of national and global issues, as was made clear in her interview with Charlie Gibson. I needn’t go dirty here, or talk about anything petty. She is simply wrong for the job in all the ways that matter.

Before I go, let me just pose a question to all of you that applaud Mccain’s choice and plan to vote for them: if you or someone you love were raped or were a victim of incest, how would you feel if we lived in a country in which abortion was illegal? Think about this carefully. And when that 3 AM phone call comes into the Oval Office, should Mccain be indisposed by old age or illness in the next year, do you really want Palin to pick up the line? Say Dimitri Medvedev decided to invade Georgia again, or their was a crisis in the Gulf, or a natural disaster, or maybe the repercussions of the current economic crisis came to a head. When you look into your heart of hearts, would you feel safe if Palin were in control? Remember, this isn’t American Idol, we’re choosing a president and the person a heartbeat away from that esteemed office. This is deadly serious.

Just some thoughts from reading this:

On the Palin disinvite - Hillary shows her pettiness and illustrates the fraud the Democrat party has perpetrated on the American people time and again. Currently, Barack Obama is out there disparaging negative campaigning, yet a study just out reveals that he’s taken negative campaigning to a whole new level. Back on topic, those of you claiming that if Palin was invited then someone from Obama Biden should have been invited don’t understand publicity. The even was a bipartisan event. Anyone from either party, whether a state representative or Pres/VP nominee would have satisfied that. The organizers should pick those from each party that would maximize exposure for the event, and certainly Palin would do that. I think Hillary was an excellent choice from the Dem side. The argument that the people invited needed to be of the same level is balderdash.

On Hagee:

The quotes Stefanie posted are fairly innocuous, typical of a lot of religious sentiment. Hagee didn’t say that NO deserved to get hit, only that it appeared to be G-d’s will, and he further surmised that there could have been a reason for it (ie, sin). In reality, to disagree with what Hagee said, in some regards, is to disagree with the existence of G-d, insofar as Hagee spoke about G-d’s will. Holding Hagee up as a counterexample to Jeremiah Wright is desperate and severely lacking.

On points of view:

It’s nice to see the reasoned opinions of people like Mike, Ann, Eric, and many others. Unfortunately, some here were so caught up in hate and partisanship that they refused to acknowledge the despicable acts of the organizers of this rally, went on to disparage a majority of this country by minimalizing their POV, and just plain insulted others when their own argument fell apart, as any argument based on hatred inevitably must.

Finally, to Stefanie:

You are preying on ignorance and fear-mongering when you claim that Sarah Palin will force women to have babies and return us to the days of back-alley abortions. Surely you know that the Vice President has no such power. Surely you also know that Congress is not likely to pass any such legislation that might be drawn up to those ends. You also must know that even should legislation pass Congress that completely outlaws abortion without exception, that there will be years of legal challenges to the legitimacy of said legislation, and that legislation is extremely unlikely to pass Constitutional muster, even with a conservative Supreme Court. The only conclusion one can draw is that fear is the only real argument you have. I would have hoped that such a progressive person as yourself would value the sanctity of life, and would not be as radical as your posts lead me to believe. I was pro-choice, until I wrestled with it and came to one simple truth - that a baby will result from the development of a fertilized egg. I respect your position, however defending it with irrational fear does not suit you.

Haha, reminds me of how Cynthia McKinney was elected to Congress representing Dekalb County, GA, due to the Jewish vote. First there she pandered to every Arab country and Islamic group. Her actions were outrageous (remember she asked for the Arab money Rudy Giuliani turned down after 911). She lost in the next primary Denise Magette in 2002. When Majette ran for the senate in 2004, McKinney ran for her old position. Once again, McKinney received almost 100% of the jewish vote. It was revealed that she had once again campaign donations from Arab groups, including some who were linked to terrorism.

Mike,

To be perfectly frank, the thing I find so hard to understand about your point of view is your acceptance of Hagee. He has been widely derided by many trusted sources. There is nothing you can really complain about when it comes to, for instance, Bill Moyers, who has spoken out against Hagee. Hagee has had to apologize to many for his inflammatory statements. There is no “context” for the statements I quoted above. There is no excuse for saying that the people of New Orleans brought on their own suffering via their sins. Put the rest of the sentences in the paragraphs around what I quoted above and the ideas are equally as offensive. He also uses a literal interpretation of the bible, which makes rational inquiry and dialogue impossible. Yes, he’s raised plenty of money for Israel, but I’ve already commented up-thread about that. Donations do not necessarily mean that radical, hate-filled speech should go unpunished. See the example of Hamas and Farrakhan above for reference.

Believe me, you can go far to the left of Michael Lerner. He’s just slightly left of center. He is a rabbi, a professor, and a very spiritual man who believes in the preservation of the state of Israel, peace, and equality for all. I have met him, up at the Jewish Center Elat Chaim in the Catskills. In addition to Tikkun Magazine, his wonderful books Jewish Renewal and Spirit Matters have meant much to me.

As for cataloging my fears, at this moment Sarah Palin is indeed first on my list. She is in line for the most powerful job in the world, a heartbeat away from the Presidency under a man whose health is quite frail. I have already listed her retrograde views on all the issues important not just to Jews, but to all Americans except for an extremely small far-right population. I don’t think it’s fair for such a small minority to hijack the conversation with distractions. The moment we begin to discuss real issues and not just star power (or lipstick on pigs), people will realize she’s far out of step with the majority of Americans. I cannot live in a county where I would be refused the right to an abortion had I been raped, and I don’t want that world to exist for my daughter. There is little that I can think of that’s scarier than going back to back-alley abortions and women’s bodies being legislated by the state.

As for Ahmadinejad, I see him a rather weak troll, a man controlled by the mullahs in his country. He is desperate for power, but lacking in it, and the Iranian people would like to fire him. They want freedom and peace and reform. If we drop bombs on them they’ll immediately flock to support him, however. That’s what happens when we start wars. Iran wants power—the nuclear issue is about having a voice amongst Arab nations in the ME—it’s really a Sunni/Shiah issue and not truly about Israel or Jews! That’s red meat for his people, because of the Palestinian issue. It’s obviously extremely, extremely complicated, a geo-political chess game. And lest we forget that Israel is a nuclear power, one that far surpasses Iran in weaponry of every sort. Do you think the Iranians are dumb enough to start a war that would surely end in the destruction of their entire country and the deaths of all of their citizens? They have no interest in national suicide—they want the opposite—they want power and popularity and a place on the world stage. Bush has given him that, and Mccain will only give him more. Obama will skillfully, like Clinton, put him in his place while simultaneously repairing the damaged reputation of the US in the world. So that we actually have allies again - something we’ve lost under Bush. And Ahmadinejad eats up these rallies we hold against him—he lives for them! He laughs at us when we get so out of control when he’s coming to town, because it just gets him press. If we ignored him and continued to put economic pressure on Iran, always keeping the military option on the table, of course, he’d eventually cave. Don’t you think we have CIA and Mossad already in country? Of course we do. And we have been on the ground breaking down the regime for years. Yes, these things take time. But we’ve created many a coup (remember when we did it with the Shah?) and we could certainly do it again.

That’s my two cents.

Shabbat Shalom,

Stefanie

Stefanie

I’m just a guy from fly over country who was raised Jewish and fell away from the flock. I think what I see and read here is a reinforcement of my decision to be more secular than religious. If I understand what happened, it’s that an anti Ahmadinejad rally was planned and two speakers were invited to speak against his policies concerning Israel. One declined, after accepting. After the first declined, the second was ‘un-invited’ because she was no longer (searching for a word here—qualified? smart enough? fair enough?) to speak out against Ahmadinejad’s policies concerning the obliteration of Israel.

Now again, I’m not real bright, but who’s the winner here? Instead of two successful, high profile Christian women speaking in solidarity with the Jews against Tehran’s policies, you have..... NONE. And not only do you have neither supporting your cause (and rightly, the cause of all Americans: women and men, Jews and Gentiles, Republicans and Democrats), but you’re involved in a war of words among yourselves, displaying all manner of hostility toward one another.

The bad news is, the threat from Iran is real.

The worse news is, you’re so busy being divisive toward each other that what could have been a positive thing is turned on it’s head and people are deciding to drop out rather than to come together against the real threat.

I ask again, who is better off now?

I agree with Sam:

I want to know the names of those Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations that voted to disinvite Palin because I will be darned if I ever donate a single cent to their causes again, and I want them to know why. They do not represent me. We need a shake up in Washington and we need to have a major shake up in our own Jewish communities and organizations.

what a sad state. you want to organize an anti-palin rally?? how about an anti-iranian hitler rally?? who is your real enemy??? palin, because she thinks you should believe in jesus, or the iranian hitler, who thinks israel should be whipped off the map?? the sad thing is, 10 years ago, i would have joined you. my eyes have been opened in the years since i left college and joined the real world. and lest you call me a greedy, right wing racist, please know that i used to share your views. but now instead of protesting palin, i am building houses with habitat for humanity, going on my FIFTH year as a Big Sister, raising my lovely son (hubby is a conservative BLACK man - GASP!!!!), sending money to Haiti monthly to support a young boy, and volunteering for McCain in Portland headquarters. i know...what a lost Jew am i. btw, my “lost” jewish grandma can’t wait to pull the lever for McCain either.

Stefanie,

If you really see yourself as a “moderate” and if you see Michael Lerner as a “moderate” and if you see Dennis Prager as a “lunatic” then I would suggest that your viewpoint is somewhat skewed. The long list of blog entries here would confirm that. I have read Michael Lerner, and he is no “moderate.” I’m sure that most of the others here would agree with my impression of Lerner.

You say >>> every single other comment you took out of context from my responses says absolutely nothing about any radicalism on my part.

Just like you took Pastor Hagee’s words out of context? If you can’t see the radicalism in your words then this is yet another example of how you are unable to be objective about moderation and radicalism.

>>> my views are middle-of-the-road compared to yours

Please tell me what you perceive my views to be? From my postings you can tell that I’m obviously a conservative, I see evangelical Christians as individuals rather than as objects to be feared and hated, and I’m appalled that we have not been able to stand united against the monster Ahmadinijad. I don’t know that I have expounded any other views here on this forum other than suggesting that you broaden your personal worldview and allow for others to believe differently than you. Other than that, what else do you know of my views and how can you possibly form a judgement that your views are more middle of the road than are mine? Judging by the long list of postings here, I would say that far more people share my view regarding the dis-invitation of Governor Palin as share your viewpoint. and you perceive yourself to be more “middle of the road” than me?

I only have one last question for you Stefanie. Who do you fear more - Sarah Palin, John Hagee or Mahmoud Ahmadinijad?

Shabbat Shalom,

This entire business is a fiasco. All that the Jewish American leadership is doing is demonstrating disregard and disrespect for the potential future vice president of the United States, and, consequently, for the potential future president of the USA as well. Our leadership needs to get its priorities MUCH straighter very quickly—Israel and the U.S. are under threat. All today’s political gymnastics did was give encouragement to the mullocracy of Tehran. I am very disturbed to see our Jewish leadership fall into this trap of parochial partisanship when we should be showing the Iranians strength and determination—not petty bickering, posturing and weakness.

Regarding my comments about Rabbi Funnyé, I find it outrageous that George (or anyone) would call him names (self-hating Jew? This man has done more to bring Jews and non-Jews together, and has inspired many people to convert to Judaism...). I doubt that George knows him, whereas I do. I repeat my request to avoid loshon-hora, but I guess some righties can’t do that.

As for the righties who keep quoting the usual Republican talking points about Bill Ayers (Obama was eight when Ayers committed his horrible acts) or Tony Rezko or whoever else. McCain knows plenty of questionable people too, including the man who is responsible for much of the current economic meltdown, his advisor Phill Gramm, so tell me why you guys keep saying the same things over and over about Obama-- go look at your own guy.

Also, Obama IS pro-Israel, as many rabbis of ALL denominations and sects will tell you. You folks need to get some different talking points.

Stephanie, Do you really support Barak Obama, for twenty years the faithful supporter of the Rev. Timothy Wright and his church, giving it $20,000? And he claims he didn’t know what Wright was saying?? The associate of bomber-terrorist Bill Ayers and of convicted swindler Tony Rezko, who helped him buy his million dollar house???

The decision of the Conference of National Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations to disinvite Governor Sarah Palin, Vice-Presidential candidate for the Republican party, to speak at the rally against Ahmadinejad, is shameful. If this organization did not want to engage in partisan politics, why did it invite Senator Hillary Clinton to speak, long before inviting Governor Palin?

I suspect that Senator Clinton’s decision not to share the same platform in a rally opposing Ahmadinejad was on orders from Senator Barak Obama. Her decision indicates that partisan politics is more important than the welfare of the United States and other potential victims of Iran. If it was on Obama’s orders, it shows that he does NOT oppose Ahmadinejad.

Ahmadinejad must be laughing. Opposition to him is NOT bipartisan. The rally might as well be cancelled.

Mike,

I’ll give you just a twaddling twitter of insight into my eschatology.

I only do so to provide insight into my strong feelings and grave concern for the continued well-being of Israel and Jews everywhere, no matter my silly maiden post here with me being miffed and taking petty offense (forbidden silliness on my part in my initial post here - I could no more stop supporting Israel and her people at large and my beloved Jewish friends than I could live if you ripped my heart out -

THAT much I learned in 1990, even when I did not at that time understand the why of it.)

I can honestly assure you of this, Mike, whither goes Israel and her people, Jews everywhere, goes my Gentile heart.

I should probably write what follows, smite the “Submit Comment” and swiftly duck and dodge - - in the event other of my Christian brethren are reading along here

since I’m about to reveal my eschatological bent ... which I think perhaps about 5,000 of us worldwide hold to! [A moment of levity here, since I can’t factually

have a clue how many of us in the Christian Church actually subscribe to my

eschatological POV ... but from the heat it generates, I can promise you we aren’t in the majority. ]

I am ... dare I confess it in a public forum? ... an Amillenist!

I am NOT here to proselytize and the only reason I point you to my eschatological POV is because methinks it will give you a great deal of insight into why I do not

subscribe to the the silliness of some who hyper-spiritualize the ancient texts, thus erroneously supplanting Israel with the Church.

Forgive me if I offend in even broaching it ... but I believe once you know that, it lends understanding to why Israel and the Jewish people will ever be dear to me.

This is why what ultimately would become the total politicizing of the CoP rally, thus demolishing a UNIFIED, SOLIDIFIED FRONT in the face of the madman from

Tehran and his gaggle of mullahs, has angered and perplexed me.

I thought the rally was to set aside partisanship to condemn the vile threats of Tehran as one. Could we

not have all managed that for a single moment in time?

Or is there too much vitriol and hatred to ever bring us together again for the good of Israel and her people? Why can we not hold divergent personal political views and yet still act together to save Israel and her people from the unthinkable?

Are our hearts THAT irreparably divided forevermore? I do not understand this. I will NOT believe it must be like this.

Stephanie, Do you really support Obama, a man who for twenty years has been a member of the church of Rev. Timothy Wright, contributing $20,000 to it? Not to speak of bomber-terrorist Bill Ayers and swindler Tony Resko? And you think Obama is good???

I suspect that the order not to attend the rally organized by the National Association of Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations came to Senator Hillary Clinton (an elected official) from Obama. This shows not only that Senator Clinton puts party politics above the welfare of the United States as well as other potential victims of Iran, but that Obama is not opposed to Ahmanjihad.

The decision to disinvite Governor Sarah Palin, the Vice-Presidential candidate of the Republican party, is disgraceful. So the NAPMJO was not being partisan when it invited Hillary Clinton to speak, well before it invited Governor Palin? It showed its partisanship for the Democratic party by kowtowing to Senator Clinton and disinviting Governor Palin. Ahmanjihad must be laughing at the disunity of Americans about him. The rally will be useless.
