Interesting).  You see Ron, for not–that-intelligent-people like me, words are nothing but sounds until we associated them with an object, a feeling or an act.  So with that in mind, lets us review your assertion again, shall we?  Obama said, among other things, that “…the recognition that the aspiration for a Jewish homeland is rooted in a tragic history that cannot be denied.” When someone says ‘tragic history’ the first thing that comes to mind – the first thing that people like me (and especially people from my father’s and grandfather’s generation) associate ‘tragic history’ with is… the Holocaust!  It is also very clear that Obama meant the Holocaust when he ended the sentence with “cannont be denied” since, as I am sure you know, some of our enemies are trying to do exactly that – deny the Holocaust!  Secondly, when X is rooted in Y, according to Merriam Webster (one source), that Y “is an origin or source” of X.  Taken together, dear Ron, to us, Israelis - to people like my dad and mom and to families that have been through the holocaust and to those who have not… Obama’s statement can NOT have any other meaning or association but to say Israel (aspiration for a Jewish homeland) has its origin (rooted) in holocaust (tragic history). Now, I can imagine what you are saying… what about this “bond” that Obama was talking about.  That context Ron does not negate from the fact that the linkage, as I explained above, was made.  So… I don’t know how much more clearly I can explain the above to someone as intelligent as you.  So let me try your way: Obama.
