Shapiro defers to Specter

One of the rumored candidates for the Democratic U.S. Senate nomination in Pennsylvania -- before today -- was Jewish Democrat Josh Shapiro, a state representative in the Keystone State. But the field is clearing for new Dem Arlen Specter. Shapiro tells JTA that he was considering a run, but he now "will not be a candidate" for the seat.

"This is a good day for the Democratic Party," said Shapiro. "It further demonstrates that we are a broad-based party and a party of inclusion."
