What Palin would have said today (and why Hillary backed out)
I've spent the past few days listening to people play the blame game about today's Iran rally: Malcolm, Malcolm bo-balcom, banna fanna fo-Hillary, mi my mo-morman – Forman. One thing is clear: The McCain camp did intend to use the joint appearance with Hillary Clinton as a hammer with which to slam Barack Obama.
How do we know?
Because the McCain campaign is circulating the remarks that it says she would have given at the rally (they were published in Monday's New York Sun).
Check out this passage:
Earlier this year, Senator Clinton said that "Iran is seeking nuclear weapons, and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps is in the forefront of that" effort. Senator Clinton argued that part of our response must include stronger sanctions, including the designation of the IRGC as a terrorist organization. John McCain and I could not agree more.
Translation: Clinton gets the threat, Obama and Biden don't.
The back story: Clinton voted for a resolution calling on the Bush administration to designate the Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist group. Obama and Biden voted against it.
The missing piece of information: Obama and Biden say they agree with the Bush administration's subsequent decision to sanction the Iranian outfit, but opposed the resolution over concerns that the White House might use the measure to justify future military action against Iran without Congressional resolution.
So ... if we are to believe that these were really her intended remarks... Not only was Palin planning to use Clinton (and her platform at the Jewish community-sponsored rally) to swipe at Obama, but she was going to do so in a misleading way.
Democrats may have mishandled the situation, and may be unfairly assigning sinister motives to rally organizers, but one thing is clear: They were right to be concerned that the invitation to Palin would infuse a heavy dose of partisanship into what was supposed to be a unity rally.
UPDATED: Forgot to mention that Palin also planned to offer a strong plug for McCain's Iraq policy:
If we retreat without leaving a stable Iraq, Iran's nuclear ambitions will be bolstered. If Iran acquires nuclear weapons – they could share them tomorrow with the terrorists they finance, arm, and train today. Iranian nuclear weapons would set off a dangerous regional nuclear arms race that would make all of us less safe.
In general, that would be a perfectly understandable and legitimate point to make in a stump speech, but not the best talking point for a rally aimed at building a politically diverse coalition for tougher sanctions against Iran.
Here's the full text:
I am honored to be with you and with leaders from across this great country – leaders from different faiths and political parties united in a single voice of outrage.Tomorrow, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will come to New York – to the heart of what he calls the Great Satan – and speak freely in this, a country whose demise he has called for.
Ahmadinejad may choose his words carefully, but underneath all of the rhetoric is an agenda that threatens all who seek a safer and freer world. We gather here today to highlight the Iranian dictator's intentions and to call for action to thwart him.
He must be stopped.
The world must awake to the threat this man poses to all of us. Ahmadinejad denies that the Holocaust ever took place. He dreams of being an agent in a "Final Solution" – the elimination of the Jewish people. He has called Israel a "stinking corpse" that is "on its way to annihilation." Such talk cannot be dismissed as the ravings of a madman – not when Iran just this summer tested long-range Shahab-3 missiles capable of striking Tel Aviv, not when the Iranian nuclear program is nearing completion, and not when Iran sponsors terrorists that threaten and kill innocent people around the world.
The Iranian government wants nuclear weapons. The International Atomic Energy Agency reports that Iran is running at least 3,800 centrifuges and that its uranium enrichment capacity is rapidly improving. According to news reports, U.S. intelligence agencies believe the Iranians may have enough nuclear material to produce a bomb within a year.
The world has condemned these activities. The United Nations Security Council has demanded that Iran suspend its illegal nuclear enrichment activities. It has levied three rounds of sanctions. How has Ahmadinejad responded? With the declaration that the "Iranian nation would not retreat one iota" from its nuclear program.
So, what should we do about this growing threat? First, we must succeed in Iraq. If we fail there, it will jeopardize the democracy the Iraqis have worked so hard to build, and empower the extremists in neighboring Iran. Iran has armed and trained terrorists who have killed our soldiers in Iraq, and it is Iran that would benefit from an American defeat in Iraq.
But Iran is not only a regional threat; it threatens the entire world. It is the no. 1 state sponsor of terrorism. It sponsors the world's most vicious terrorist groups, Hamas and Hezbollah. Together, Iran and its terrorists are responsible for the deaths of Americans in Lebanon in the 1980s, in Saudi Arabia in the 1990s, and in Iraq today. They have murdered Iraqis, Lebanese, Palestinians, and other Muslims who have resisted Iran's desire to dominate the region. They have persecuted countless people simply because they are Jewish.
Iran is responsible for attacks not only on Israelis, but on Jews living as far away as Argentina. Anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial are part of Iran's official ideology and murder is part of its official policy. Not even Iranian citizens are safe from their government's threat to those who want to live, work, and worship in peace. Politically-motivated abductions, torture, death by stoning, flogging, and amputations are just some of its state-sanctioned punishments.
It is said that the measure of a country is the treatment of its most vulnerable citizens. By that standard, the Iranian government is both oppressive and barbaric. Under Ahmadinejad's rule, Iranian women are some of the most vulnerable citizens.
If an Iranian woman shows too much hair in public, she risks being beaten or killed.
If she walks down a public street in clothing that violates the state dress code, she could be arrested.
But in the face of this harsh regime, the Iranian women have shown courage. Despite threats to their lives and their families, Iranian women have sought better treatment through the "One Million Signatures Campaign Demanding Changes to Discriminatory Laws." The authorities have reacted with predictable barbarism. Last year, women's rights activist Delaram Ali was sentenced to 20 lashes and 10 months in prison for committing the crime of "propaganda against the system." After international protests, the judiciary reduced her sentence to "only" 10 lashes and 36 months in prison and then temporarily suspended her sentence. She still faces the threat of imprisonment.
Senator Clinton understands the nature of this threat and what we must do to confront it. This is an issue that should unite all Americans. Iran should not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons. Period. And in a single voice, we must be loud enough for the whole world to hear: Stop Iran!
Only by working together, across national, religious, and political differences, can we alter this regime's dangerous behavior. Iran has many vulnerabilities, including a regime weakened by sanctions and a population eager to embrace opportunities with the West. We must increase economic pressure to change Iran's behavior.
Tomorrow, Ahmadinejad will come to New York. On our soil, he will exercise the right of freedom of speech – a right he denies his own people. He will share his hateful agenda with the world. Our task is to focus the world on what can be done to stop him.
We must rally the world to press for truly tough sanctions at the U.N. or with our allies if Iran's allies continue to block action in the U.N. We must start with restrictions on Iran's refined petroleum imports.
We must reduce our dependency on foreign oil to weaken Iran's economic influence.
We must target the regime's assets abroad; bank accounts, investments, and trading partners.
President Ahmadinejad should be held accountable for inciting genocide, a crime under international law.
We must sanction Iran's Central Bank and the Revolutionary Guard Corps – which no one should doubt is a terrorist organization.
Together, we can stop Iran's nuclear program.
Senator McCain has made a solemn commitment that I strongly endorse: Never again will we risk another Holocaust. And this is not a wish, a request, or a plea to Israel's enemies. This is a promise that the United States and Israel will honor, against any enemy who cares to test us. It is John McCain's promise and it is my promise.
Thank you.

I am absolutely appalled at the thought that one single Jew would vote for the MCCain/Palin ticket. Thank G-d she was disinvited. She actively promotes the teachings of her church, including the association with Jews for Jesus! For any of you who actually believe that Palin is pro-Israel, I want to know what rock you’re living under. She is unprepared, ultra conservative, a PROUD member of the religious right, and has shown repeatedly that she will gladly remove ALL women’s rights, taking us back to the 1920s. The most disturbing thing is that, because McCain is 72 yo, has a history of heart disease, and Cancer, and continues to suffer from PTSD, the probability of a President Palin is all too believable. How can any Jew vote for a person who embraces the Religious Right (and no other rights...)? Unbelievable!
I was happy to be there but I’m sorry they disinvited Sarah Palin ithink that she is amazing and I intend to vote for her and the top of the ticket Mccain they wouldn’t sell Israel like the left and the Europeans want.
I was pleased to see all the signs that read “Where is Sara” the majority of the crowd was deffintley on her side.
Sorry petty Hillary you lost my vote forever first kissing Suah Arafat and now kissing the Jews goodbye SHAME ON YOU AND YOUR DEFEAT PARTY

You are an idiot, robert--a drooling simpleton who is being led to drink from the extreme right wing kool aid trough.
Do you know that right wing religious Christians are usually racists and anti-semitic as well? Yes, some may say that they support Israel but they also want Jews to “go back to Jesus” and think that anti-Jewish terrorism is God’s retribution.
I feel sorry for you--you must lead an angry, bumbling, miserable life! Your reasoning is incoherent and you appear to share the same problem as Sarah Palin, your idol. Both of you are seriously misinformed and completely ignorant.
Go back to Idiotville, robert. You’re a big time loser. All you know how to do is use curse words. Try to base what you say on knowledge and reasoning instead of emotions next time. You fell in love with right wing religious Christians just because you visited Pastor Hagee’s church? What’s your I.Q.? 40?
You evince the classic traits of a loser.
Worse yet, you are exactly the type of simple-minded borderline I.Q. acolyte that Hitler and his fascists used to love to ensnare. I feel sorry for your family.
Guy, thanks for being there and we fully agree about the wife of the former impeached President and about Governor Palin--who would surely lead the most pro-Israel administration ever if she ascended to the Presidency.
The contrast here is unbelievably bad and the supporters of Obama-Biden have quite a challenge to defend their candidates on Israel since neither have any pro-Israel credentials. Worse, Obama is cheered and has been offered tons of money from our nation’s enemies, including all of Israel’s enemies. His Rev. Wright is openly hostile to Israel and his cohorts include a who is who among US antisemites. Somehow, there are Jews who support this con man and the reasons are interesting but this remains disgusting. Truth to Power and Gladys operate habitually and they are like Steven Grossman--"genetic Democrats” who have not stopped to notice that the Democratic Party has gone horribly wrong in recent decades to the point where the leaders are simple socialists. Moderate Dems paying attention have a hard time pulling the lever for a man who is not patriotic to say the least. Their own pollster, Stan Greenberg points to this problem--Obama does not love America as any Presidential aspirant should and this makes voters uneasy--Greenberg tells us through extensive interviews with moderate Dems who would ordinarily vote for the Democratic candidate.
Therefore, are Jews loyal to the Dem Party less willing to own up to the problem? My answer is “yes” and the reasons are complex but the silver lining here is more Jews will vote against the top of the Democratic ticket this year.
It is curious that Gladys cries foul regarding inviting Governor Palin to speak. The entire nature of bi-partisan is that both sides participate--so I must ask for clarification to Gladys--what part of bi-partisan are you confused about?
The confusion among the Jews is displaced anxiety and this is a signal that the community is evolving. Soon, the majority will be conservative. In the meantime, change would quickly come if individual left-leaning Jews simply read what they are saying with an open mind. Gladys says, downplaying the Iranian threat and highlights the alleged threat posed by John McCain. One can easily be anxious about the threat posed by Iran’s radicals screaming that they will bury Israel, America and the Jews. Instead of facing the threat, it is much more comfortable to focus on an imaginary threat from modest John McCain instead. Psychological comfort may be fine but rationality is better. Gladys cannot possibly indicate that an alleged threat from John McCain who wants fiscal restraint, more savings, less corruption, more defense in his experienced hands is comparable to a direct threat from a rogue state aimed at Jews first. Similarly, Truth to Power’s obsession with conservative Christians is so misplaced--it is difficult to even imagine what he could possibly have in mind. These Jew-wannabes are in gratitude to our Torah, they visit and send money to Israel enthusiastically, they buy our books, they visit Chabad.org and Aish.com, they listen to lectures about the Bible day and night and see their morality derived from the Jewish Bible. How on earth is this possibly a problem--unless one is an atheist?
Perhaps we can speculate if it is worse, for the Jewish Left, that the evangelical Christians are Republican or the Orthodox Jews? In either case, the path is becoming worn and the rest of the community will follow, as the days when the Jews care more about abortion than Israel are quickly coming to an end.
Pat A. wrote,
“How can any Jew vote for a person who embraces the Religious Right (and no other rights…)? “
Very easily, when the Democrat poses arm in arm with a notable racist and anti-Semite (Sharpton) and endorses both him and his hate group, which screamed racial and anti-Semitic epithets at a Jewish-owned store, Freddy’s Fashion Mart, in 1995.
And that is not all Sharpton has done, and I haven’t even brought in Jeremiah Wright and the rest of Obama’s entourage of racists, Jew-haters, and Catholic-hating bigots (e.g. MoveOn.org).
I’m confused. Why does everyone keep referring to this speech as “Sarah Palin’s speech”? Did she write it? (No. It was written by her handlers.) Did she deliver it? (No. She was dis-invited and thus never spoke it.)
So in what sense is it Sarah Palin’s speech at all? Can anyone produce a shred of evidence that more than half the terms and nomenclature in that speech were even in her vocabulary before a month ago?
So why is anybody patting Palin on the back for the speech?
you know what robert.....you had better watch your mouth....you may think lobbing words like idiot and scum and such is ok....but when you make actual death threats, those are being taken seriously and will be reported to the authorities. I have reported your comments to the JTA website administrators and the WeHo Sheriff’s Dept. I do not know if you are jewish...but if you are...think before you dare speak or respond to me and especially as we approach a New Year. SHANA TOVA!
and for the record...here is something you watch of ISRAELIS who are for Obama. Watch it...it is refreshing.
Interesting.... I see that Robert’s death threat blogs to Pat A and Matt have been removed. I hope the JTA will also report this to NYPD and the FBI. This is serious stuff and not to be trifled with.
That being said, I want to send a message out to everyone, and especially the vitriolic bloggers. I am not without sin here. I have used some harsh terms toward the Republican Jews. But really people...ENOUGH! Maspeek! DAYENU! We are approaching Rosh Hashonah and Yom Kippur. A time of improving our lives not tearing down one another. OK we will disagree on politcal matters...but keep it to the issues rather than insulting innuendo and flasehoods about Obama or McCain. Obama is no more a Muslim than my grandma Tillie was a bootlegger. It’s ridiculous. STOP IT! Focus on the real issues. Focus on AMERICA! Please, leave your Obama-kahs and McCain-ikahs at home this Yom Tov. Lets turn, make t’shuva towards each other than at each others throats.
If anyone here has any connection to the RJC. Please tell them to pull their ads. The only effect it is having is exactly what our enemies want.Stop this politicizing of Judasim.
I apologize to all bloggers whom I have offended.
Shana Tova.
