Rabbis for Obama
More than 300 rabbis from across the country and across the denominations are publicly backing Barack Obama for president. According to a press release, Rabbis for Obama is a "grassroots effort" founded by two rabbis from Obama's home state of Illinois, Rabbi Sam Gordon of Wilmette, and Rabbi Steven Bob of Glen Ellyn, and includes prominent figures such as University of Judaism rector Rabbi Elliot Dorf, former Central Conference of American Rabbis president Rabbi Janet Marder and Rabbi Burton Visotzky, professor at the Jewish Theological Seminary. Also on the list, named as one of the organization's vice chairs, is Rabbi Ethan Tucker – stepson of the head of the honorary Senate rabbis for McCain, Joe Lieberman.
The rabbis write that Obama "has been inspired by Jewish values such as Tikkun Olam and the pursuit of justice, and he is deeply committed as well to a civil discourse between opposing arguments." They also note the smear campaign against the Democrat and say "we feel it is our duty as Jewish leaders to fight for the truth and against Lashon Hara."
The full letter and list of signatories is here:
Dear Friends:As rabbis who believe that Barack Obama is the best candidate to be President of the United States, we have formed "Rabbis for Obama" as a grassroots organization of rabbis from all movements and backgrounds. We join together to support Senator Obama for President, and we do so in the belief that he will best support the issues important to us in the Jewish community.
Some of us know Senator Obama personally, and we recognize that he has been inspired by Jewish values such as Tikkun Olam and the pursuit of justice, and he is deeply committed as well to a civil discourse between opposing arguments. We also know that Senator Obama will inspire young people, both in the Jewish community and the wider American community, to become more involved in improving this country and repairing the world.
We know that Barack Obama's longstanding, stalwart support for Israel is a testament to his own principles as well as the strong bi-partisan pro-Israel movement in America, and we fear that the attempts by some to use Israel as a wedge issue against him - unjustifiably - is dangerous in that it politicizes the pro-Israel position. Most importantly it has completely distorted Senator Obama's record. With his tough but pragmatic approach to Iran, Senator Obama is in the best position to restore faith in America as a leader in the fight against serious threats to Israel, our allies, and the United States.
Senator Barack Obama inspires in us the hope for an America once more called to its best values. We know him to be a man of incredible integrity, born of a deep and abiding spiritual faith based on the teachings of the Hebrew Prophets, and committed to achieving a world of peace with justice for all people.
We are fully aware that a smear campaign against Senator Obama has been waged in the Jewish community, and we feel it is our duty as Jewish leaders to fight for the truth and against Lashon Hara. Senator Obama has been viciously attacked using innuendoes, rumors, and guilt by association, and we urge our fellow American Jews to judge Senator Obama based on his own record and the clear statements he has made about his personal beliefs and principles. Continuing efforts to defame him and distort his record help perpetuate a deeply disturbing political process in our country.
We hope that the members of the American Jewish community will seek to learn more about the Senator, his story, and his positions on issues. Senator Obama's record and background clearly demonstrate that he shares our commitment to change the direction of this country, both at home and around the globe. Thank you,

Rabbis,
As a Conservative Jew, I am appalled and disappointed (not surprised) by these 300 Rabbis that have signed this letter.
Just a couple of points. Does Tikum Olam not apply to the people of Iraq? They now have the opportunity for a better life due to the commitment of President Bush, America and many brave men and women who have fought so bravely? An evil Dictator who was slaughtering, and torturing his people, including women and children has been removed and no longer represents a threat to his people. Is this something we as Jews cannot be proud of? Do we not know and remember that Freedom is never free and always a price to pay.
Secondly, “guilt by association” represents reprehensible judgment on Senator Obama’s part. His close association with Rev. Wright should deem this man unfit to serve the American people. Surely, the Anti Semitic hate speech of Black Liberation Theology, the hate speech against the United States, and whites preached in Obama’s church should appall all Americans, Jews, and Rabbis. Jews would not listen to David Duke for 20 years. Why is Reverend Wright OK? Jews would not listen to their Rabbis give sermons preaching such hate for one Yom Kippur, or 5 Shabbat minutes let alone for 20 years. To trivialize Obama’s “associations” such as Rev. Wright, Louis Farakahn, William Ayers, etc. is a travesty and blindness I feel on all your parts.
If you want “smear,” nothing compares to the smear campaign the Obama camp is laying on Sarah Palin, the first Republican woman VP candidate ever. The Democrats, and media are even attacking her children.
Continue to vote for Liberal candidates regardless of who they are, and what they represent if you must. It is certainly your rights as Americans, but please don’t wrap Obama’s candidacy in Jewish precepts as Tikum Olam to rationalize support for a candidate who arguably is not qualified for the highest position in the land, and who’s friends, associates, and clergy are highly suspect.
As a Jew and a Cohen, I’m ashamed of our religious leaders who’ve signed this letter.
“Inspired by Jewish values?!” What a perversion! Obama is a Muslim, and associates himself with evil and deceitful individuals.
May our People rise-up against this!
Who cares what all you commentators think. You’re a bunch of wing nut religious psychopaths. At least religion is going away. Sure enough, finally. Then we can finally have reason, a fine representative for reason is obama. Have fun losing mccain supporters.
Obama is a Muslim? You are either really stupid, straight out lying or both. I’m ashamed to be a Jew with that kind of ignorance. Pathetic…
Those deliberately lying about Obama and trying to hide the gross failure, waste, and missed opportunity of the past 8 years due to subverted Republican policies should be ashamed.
Obama is a Christian, but if you care about that sort of thing, more importantly, he has a history of fighting for civil rights in and out of the court.
Guilty-by-association of inner-city religious leaders and co-workers at U. Chicago? While he was involved in those pushing our communities forward, his opposition was under corruption investigations where *we have officially documented how much was made, which is more than what most people will make in 10 years*. That is clearly an issue for a *presidential campaign*, and not only has Obama warned his campaign that he will fire anyone discussing Palin’s family, he has still not pressed on true ethics concerns. Instead, he calls for policy debates—Palin won’t have an interview without control over the interviewer, and McCain has canceled and refused to schedule debates. Media is owned by four corporations, and thus the Republican machine is able to get away with titillating red-herrings and smears while avoiding the debates Obama is rightfully trying to get the country to face.
He wasn’t in the worst 1% of military school; he was the editor of Harvard Law Review, and despite U. Chicago wanting him as a full-time faculty member, thought he could make more of a difference by standing before us this year and all those years of passing legislation before.
McCain didn’t pick Palin as a potential replacement with similar policies: he only met with her a few times before in her brief career, and, in most if not all of those occasions, voted against her. She was picked over Lieberman and popular Republicans because of her appeal to the fundamentalist base, as a cynical appeal to women, and, largely, as an attempt to take the focus off his largely Bush-era party-line (90% in lock-step!) approach.
The most powerful nation in the history… reading replies like the ones here are sickening. Why are we talking about drilling, an inconsequential topic in terms of energy in the long haul, instead of nuclear power and shrinking physics departments that dissuade students from focusing on it at a research level? Instead of talking about the possibility of having 3 simultaneous wars to ‘help the people’, how about using those billions (trillions?) on other human rights issues, like access to clean water?
These elections are embarrassing farces for such a powerful nation, and I’m ashamed of people who feed into it. Who are you really lying to? There were as many protesters as delegates at the RNC—how much more do we have to subject the world and ourselves to until we wake up?
Rick--You hit the nail on the head.
I am an Orthodox Jew, a Cohain, and Chabad member. The names on this list of CLERICAL ERRORS is a virtual Who’s Who of gays, lesbians, ham-eaters, golden calf worshipers, dirtball hippies and unemployed liberal imbeciles.
There are NO REAL RABBIS named on this list. Most of them are not even “pulpit Rabbis.” Some of them are lesbians and gays---leading a twisted deathstyle, in CLEAR violation of Torah.
When Hashem comes, They will be among the 80% who will be slaughtered. They are NOT Jews. They are extreme malcontents and leftists, who use their bogus ordinations as a wrapper to cover their stupid Marxist mental illness.
I know a few of these CLERICAL ERRORS. They are worthless purveyors of degenerate deathstyles, sin, defiling Torah, and do not even believe in Hashem. Most of them seek to give away Israel to our arab enemies.
Don’t worry. Their children (or the product of a turkey baster/lesbian “rabbi” coupling) will NOT be Jewish. They will be NOTHINGS!
These “rabbis” are a disease---nothing more.
Obama probably is not NOW a muslim. The bits of history that Barack Hussein Obama cannot conceal, however, does reveal that he was born and raised as a muslim. Later in life, he was convinced by his wife---the lovely Michelle---that if he wanted to seek political office, he would have to become a Christian (even though he never formally converted to Christianity).
The church he joined (where for 20+ years, he saw and heard NOTHING) is a hotbed of anti-White and anti-Jewish hatred. He and his mentor embraced and celebrated Jesse (Hymietown) Jackson, Calypso Louie FarraKKKlan, and a host of other gems. He also aligned crimilnals, and with Bernadine Dohrn and Bill Ayers---factual killers of police and civilians in their bombings and SDS/Weatherman activities.
Other than hiding behind his claimed “Christianity,” Obama is more a Marxist or Leninist, than a member of any recognized Christian faith.
What I find interesting is that many of the names on this list of Rabbinic vermin are the same as I have seen ---FOR YEARS---on other lists for every other left-wing cause. I guess these losers hope to one day parley their disloyalty to Judaism for a real job---perhaps (G-d forbid) in the Obama administration.
Although they all claim to be rabbis, most are unemployed losers or ham-eating golden calf worshipers.
I wish them well, and hope that they eventually find the right mental health medication that will control their psychosis.
Adam, my Laandsman---
It is time for the Cohanim to bless these misguided fools and clerical errors. They clearly are evidence of an immune disorder in Judaism. We have been too free in who is allowed to be ordained, or referred to as Rabbi. I see some real LOSERS listed in that Who’s Who list.
Thank the Deformed, Deconstructionist and Undeservative Jews for allowing such swill into their seminaries.
Not surprising though---as many of these seminaries are led by non-Rabbis, and have policies that reject G-d and violate Torah. Legitimate surveys reveal that LESS THAN HALF of the Rabbis graduating for the Conservative seminary believe in G-d, and most do not believe that teh Torah is the word of G-d. or even inspired by G-d. How could it, anyway--THEY DO NOT BELIEVE IN G-D!
I never understand why these “synagogues” even contain Torahs. The Rabbis often cannot even read or chant Hebrew, and don’t believe what they read from Torah, anyway.
I suggest that they sell their Torahs, use empty cardboard tubes, covered with ornate tapestries. They could use the Torah sale money to buy Golden Calves.
In re-reading these comments, I must tip my hat to the Torah-true Jews who have seen through this list of losers and ham-eaters. I know a few to be lesbian and gay activists, and similar OPEN VIOLATORS of Torah and Hashem.
Finally, we are smart enough to tell these false “rabbis” ---NOT IN MY NAME!!!
You do NOT speak for me. You do NOT speak for Torah or Judaism!
GO FIND A NEW CAUSE---and STOP IMPLYING THAT YOU ARE REAL RABBIS--YOU ARE NOTHING BUT A BUNCH OF LOSERS!

Wrong.
Plain and simple. Neither McCain nor Obama are going to do anything. I almost hope for Obama to win so I can laugh this time next year when things are no different. Mind you I won’t be laughing at the struggles people will be having. People will still be paying high taxes, high gas prices. giving up their liberties. Here’s the best advice you will ever receive: Get rid of credit cards, Pay off your debts and live within your means. The borrower is slave to the lender. Translation, if you have no debts then all the money you get to keep from the government can go into the bank or ira or gold or whatever. Then if you lose a job or prices continue to rise you won’t be a casualty. It’s a shame how far we’ve fallen from the “greatest generation” to the self gratification generation
