As Joe Lieberman campaigns for John McCain and steps up his criticisms of Barack Obama, he faces a growing wave of counterattacks from liberal commentators.

Jonathan Chait takes aim in the current issue of the New Republic:

There's hardly any sense in which Lieberman is an independent figure. He's become a cog in the Republican message machine. He may be independent from liberal bloggers, but the conservative equivalent–partisan shouters like Sean Hannity–are his treasured pals. Lieberman even continues to embrace lunatic preacher John Hagee–whose many daft ideas include his belief that the Holocaust fulfilled God's will–even after John McCain repudiated him.

Lieberman explains that he calls himself an "independent Democrat" because the Democratic Party's foreign policy ideals "exist in me today independent of the current Democratic Party, which has rejected them." This is a wildly egocentric interpretation. Democrats started questioning the war because the war was going badly, while Lieberman remained–to borrow a phrase–in a spider hole of denial. Most supported him in his 2006 primary fight but then endorsed the party nominee when he lost, because that's what political parties do.

And Josh Marshall of TalkingPointsMemo.com has posted a video commentary on the prospects of the Senate Democrats dumping Lieberman after November:

Re: “Most supported him in his 2006 primary fight but then endorsed the party nominee when he lost, because that’s what political parties do.”

It is to be remembered that MoveOn.org, an anti-Israel, anti-Semitic, and anti-Catholic hate organization, put up Ned Lamont to get rid of “Jew Lieberman” as MoveOn’s people called him. Lamont, like Obama, also consorted openly with the prominent racist and anti-Semite Al Sharpton. MoveOn is “donkey cancer” and Lieberman’s decision to run against “his party’s nominee” was oncology. Lieberman did his party and our country a service by defeating Lamont.

Obama also accepted MoveOn’s endorsement, thus making himself a party to MoveOn’s vicious insult to General David Petraeus. This is but one of many reasons why Obama is not qualified for any position of public trust or responsibility.

As for the war going badly, it is--for the enemy. Iraqis have had more than enough of the terrorists, and they are taking greater responsibility for their own security. It is the MoveOn camp that welcomes American casualties because dead and wounded soldiers help MoveOn’s political agenda. Note that Obama endorser Michael Moore calls the enemy “Minutemen.”

Bill,

Are we to believe you actually care about Iraqis?  Are they your primary concern or are Israelis the only ones you really care about...I thought about ditching my support for Obama after his recent business as usual statements at AIPAC when it comes to Israel....thanks to you I am back on the the Obama train!  If one finds Israeli policy towards Palestinians to be war crimes that doesn’t mean they hate jews...only that they hate jews who sponser the murderous policy such as yourself.  Lieberman is a war criminal that hides behind US power...you support a war criminal.

there are 13 senators of jewish extraction; Joe Lieberman thinks he alone knows what’s best for Israel, the Jews, and all points in between.

He also thought that he could impose his bs morality on Clinton when the other dems in the senate saw the lewinsky affair as an effort to bring down a liberal president by rabid dog hypocritical reactionaries.

Joe Lieberman pulled the top bs of all; he was beaten in the ct dem primary then conned the national dem party to back his candidacy as an indie. we need him in the senate like we need rotten meat in a butcher shop
