Rubin: McCain is a hypocrite, he was open to Hamas talks

Clinton era State Department spokesman James Rubin has an op-ed in Friday’s Washington Post noting that in an interview that he conducted with John McCain two years ago, the presumptive GOP nominee suggested that negotiations with Hamas were inevitable.
UPDATE: HuffingtonPost reports that John McCain has issued this response:
“There should be no confusion, John McCain has always believed that serious engagement would require mandatory conditions and Hamas must change itself fundamentally - renounce violence, abandon its goal of eradicating Israel and accept a two state solution. John McCain’s position is clear and has always been clear, the President of the United States should not unconditionally meet with leaders of Iran, Hamas or Hezbollah. Barack Obama has made his position equally clear, and has pledged to meet unconditionally with Iran’s leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the leaders of other rogue regimes, which shows incredibly dangerous and weak judgment.”
Apparently, Mr. Rubin defines ‘deal’ as talk, when it comes to ‘translating’ what John McCain said re Hamas. In WWII we also ‘dealt’ with Germany and Japan, after the fact. We negotiated their unconditional surrender terms, as Israel will do with Hamas and Hezbollah.
There will be no peace in the Middle East until there has been at least one more war. It is as Golda Meir said 30 years ago: “There will be peace when the Palestinians love their children more than they hate ours.”
Too much blood has been spilled on both sides. However, Arab pride will prevent their leaders from sitting down with Israel and its allies for the foreseable future.

http://www.israpundit.com/2008/?p=1118 cites the COMPLETE transcript of what McCain said. It implies very strongly that a change in Hamas’ behavior is a precondition to any talks with the McCain Administration.
