J-Vibe to shut print publication and maybe online mag, as JFL sunsets

J-Vibe, the bimonthly print and online magazine for Jewish teenagers, will publish its last print edition in the beginning of September and then will most likely shut down its online publication. It’s the latest step in the planned sunset of Jewish Family & Life.

Hey kids! I know that losing J-Vibes is a real downer! But don’t fret! Because we never got any kind of community funding, this latest economic downturn hasn’t affected us at all! You can still come to Jewlicious.com and read all the latest Jews that’s fit to print! Just make sure that Mom and Dad say it’s ok!

All kidding aside though, we are indeed saddened by the loss of yet another top-notch Jewish project, especially one aimed at the otherwise under-served teen demographic. Perhaps what will be needed in the future is long term funding in tandem with serious plans for sustainability.

Carol,

The loss of the publication is sad, but the loss of the organization in general is much more depressing. I am biased--I worked for JFL in its embryonic days--but JFL was really a revolutionary business and model in the Jewish world. RIP, JFL. I am forever indebted to you and your wonderful leadership.

This is sad to see but likely necessary as we move from print to online reading. For decades I have seen beautiful, informative Jewish publications, especially aimed at teens and young adults, fold because of funding issues. What a shame. By the time one has a real following, the leadership moves on and the finances dry up. It would be great to see long term commitments (5 or more years) to help establish a publication. Or is it perhaps each generation must re-invent this medium anew?
